I'm thinking about adding egg yolk to Poppy's diet to get more acetylcholine in her system (constipational issues). The "thinking" part is more about what type of egg than whether or not. I work and live next to several Asian supermarkets and can get easy access to quail eggs. I'm thinking quail eggs would be the perfect size, just break one and since I only have 1 kitty, no storage problems!

But would the nutritional values be the similar?

Also, I'm supposed to not feed raw whites, right?

I believe an egg is an egg and would be just as nutritional. As for the whites, there is debate on this, but I think most feel if it is given only occasionally there is no problem giving the whites raw also, but if given frequently it is better to cook the whites.

Here is a post where this was discussed. http://www.thecatsite.com/t/196699/raw-eggs

If you feed the entire egg, no need to worry about cooking. The B vitamins in the yolk offset the avidin in the white. But for constipation, you don't need the white, just the yolk.

Yes, I think quail eggs would be the perfect size. I have 8 cats, and they get 1/4 yolk at a time. They don't like "sticky" - yet don't like it cooked. So I mix it with water. For those that still don't like it, I sprinkle something on top, depending on the cat (freeze dried liver; freeze dried chicken; fortiflora).

I took screen shots of the USDA database full report info on quail eggs and chicken eggs next to each other. Obviously the information on chicken eggs is more complete, so the same lines for each item don't necessarily line up. The information is presented per 100g so you can compare. I had to use whole eggs, as they don't provide the information for just the yolk for quail eggs.

Quail is on the left, chicken is on the right. If this size is hard to read, I think you can click on the picture to make it bigger.

To give you an idea of relative proportions, the choline in chicken eggs per 100g (including the white, above) is 293.8mg (0.29%); for just the yolk, 100g has 820.2mg (0.82%). The choline is all in the yolk.

There's no way to know if a quail egg has the same amount of white per yolk (on average) though.

LDG, how often are you feeding the 1/4 yolk? I think I get around 10-12 quail eggs per container.

Another benefit of quail eggs is that they are sooooooo good looking!

We made quail egg salad for a party once. It actually was a bit different than chicken egg salad. People were asking why it was so good. But wow was it not worth the effort peeling all those little eggs!!!

I feed at least a whole egg a week. I'd probably feed it every other day if I could, but most of them just won't eat that much of it.

According to this, quail eggs have a higher yolk ratio!

Interesting thread.

@LDG, your data always makes me smile. I'm such a geek.

So @Raintyger, is Poppy still have major constipation issues? Are you just thinking of some additional things that may help her? Just curious.

Hi, GoHolistic!

Poppy's constipational issues have improved some since we started B12. She's been going every 1.5 days instead of every 2 days. I'm happy with 1.5 days, but improvement is always welcome, especially since I want her in good, reliable condition in case we go on vacation.

She has been having appetite issues since yesterday, though. Thankfully they are not too bad and I can coax her into eating if I put Fortiflora, dried sardines, or Halo Dinner Party on the food.

Thanks for asking about her!

Hi!
Glad to hear the B12 is helping.
But sorry that her appetite is off.  I hope it's nothing to cause worry.

I have to make sure my Boo goes every day or else he starts to get backed up.

Wow, great links! And good to know! Not that we can get quail eggs around here, but it's good info for those who can. :)

Awww.... hope her appetite is back soon! :vibes: :vibes: :vibes:

I was wondering the same thing--chicken versus quail eggs.
A woman at the farmer's market sells quail eggs (and yeah they do look so pretty/cute). She said she will soon be selling quail, yippee! Ritz loves quail, which I buy frozen at the international supermarket near where I live. Woman kind of looked at me strangely when I asked, will it come with its head.... (Ritz likes chicken heads.)
