My cat who is only 3 and a half yrs. old got a scratch on his head about 2 weeks ago. It got infected after caring for it , and he within 24hrs. got deathly ill. My normal vet was on vacation and I had a very hard time finding a vet to see him.But finally I got a vet in the area to see him. She ran all kinds of blood work and could not find what was wrong with him.She gave him a shot of Baytril and me the same antibodic to give him at home.I only gave it to him the next day, and by the following day he was worse! So I ended up taking him on a Sunday to a animal hospital for emergencies in State College, Pa. Right away I was told he shouldn't have been giving Baytril because it causes blindness and sure enough.....hes now blind!!!! The vet in State College believes the cut led to an infection in his brain, and now he has neurological problems:( Im so sad, I've been a wreck for 2 weeks now stressing and sad over this cat I LOVE with all my heart. I have a vet bill of $1200 that I certainly cant afford. The vet is letting me make payments thank god!!! they are very nice and wonderful Drs. at Metzger Animal Hospital in State College. But my cat is not right at all and im so afraid he'll be messed up forever. I can handle him being blind, im sure he will adjust. But he doesn't act normal at all:( Any suggestions from anyone I will much appreciate.

I really don't have any suggestions.

I would think there would be improvement after the infection is cleared up, it will be a matter of how much damage there is.  He must have been given a very large dose of Baytril.   Blindness usually occurs with either a large dose or long term use.  The safe dose that I found online is 5 mg per kg.  I looked it up when my cat was give Baytril after having teeth extracted.  My cat probably has some liver damage which limits the choices for medications, I would think there are probably safer choices for cats that don't have health conditions.

I hope your cat recovers well.

If you want to him to be a playful kitty get toys that have a sound he will still chase it like haunting a mouse.also to not scare him always call his name then come toward him.stay with him and play with him for a long time everyday till he is used to being blind.i used to have a blind cat so I know this if you have more question just ask me.i may be new but I know much about blind cats

What did the Vet say about the neurological problems?  Did they think they will subside once the infection is gone?  Could it be he's not acting like himself because of the sudden blindness?  What is he doing that makes you say he is not "all right"?  Have you discussed whatever it is with the Vet?

Sorry to ask so many questions, but it's hard to answer your questions without getting more info from you.
