4 reasons you might still need a cordless phone

Why you shouldn't abandon your landline just yet

Given that you have a cell or smart phone to stay in touch with the world, is there any reason to have a landline? The short answer is yes. For starters, our tests of more than 80 cordless phones (with and without built-in answerers) found that they provide better voice quality than their mobile counterparts, so you can enjoy conversations more. They have other advantages, too. Here’s the 411.

1. They sound better

In our tests, voice quality for talking and listening was generally better than that of the best cell phones—important if you suffer from hearing loss, your household is noisy, or you spend a lot of time on the phone, especially in a home office....

2. They improve safety

Cell phones use a GPS-based method to report your location in a 911 emergency. ...

3. You don’t save much when you cut service

Dropping a phone line from a telecom bundle might save you only $5 or so a month. ...

4. Cordless phones can actually help your cell phone

Certain cordless models can stand in for your cell phone.
This article appeared in the December 2013 issue of Consumer Reports magazine.

I still have 3 cordless phones in my home, I would never give them up.

I don't see how #2 is a defense for keeping a landline. But in any case, when I lived in the sticks, I had a landline. Now that I'm back in the suburbs so to speak, I couldn't justify keeping it. But I can certainly understand why people keep them.

I have a very basic cell phone that is used just to check messages when I'm out, or for emergencies. don't do any chit-chatting on the cell. We have a landline at home which is used for all our phone needs, long distance, etc. Also we need this for our security system. Where we live we do not get good cell phone reception, so a landline is a necessity.

I have a magic jack. I live in the country and my cell phone doesn't work well here. A magic jack is fairly cheap and I only have to worry about the bill once a year and it's only slightly more for a whole year than 1 month of a regular landline.

We have lived in the same home for 20+ years.  We had 1 telephone carrier, a different cable company and a 3rd cell phone provider.  Internet provider came later, and we've switched that a couple of times.  Right before we changed, internet and telephone were bundled.

Can't change the cell provider b/c we are under a contract and if we break it- we get charged.

When we looked at bundling cable and phone- yeah the landline cost was only $5 or so a month.  Only phone calls we got on it were junk.  The girls have their own phones- their friends call them (well they text more than call).

In the end, we bundled cable and internet.  Dropped landline.  Kept cell phone plan for now.  When the phones have to be replaced, I don't know what we'll do.

And because you just never know: you can usually only call landlines from jail. If you only have a cell phone and a friend or family member gets arrested, they will have a hard time reaching you to come bail them out!

A few years ago, I bailed out a friend who got a DUI and he had a whole list of people to call for others who couldn't reach their families and let them know they were okay but had been arrested the night before.

I can give you a couple of reasons.

1.  Even when the electricity is out, phones usually work.

2.  In our case, we have an older security system that has to have a landline to dial out.
