My kitten had a reaction after her vaccine and dewormer

I took my 6-7 week old kitten to the vet on Monday and she got her first round of vaccines (the vet wanted to break them up because she is so young) and dewormer. She has been eating and drinking, going pee and poop regularly, her stool looks normal, not runny or wierd (sorry to get so graphic) but she hasn't been her normal playful self since then, a little sluggish and sleeping more than usual.

Today she threw up, mostly water, so I called the vet. They said that she might have had a bad reaction to the vaccines, and asked to me to check for any swelling, which she doesn't seem to have. Her ears are not warm and her gums don't seem to be pale (something I googled in relation to the topic). They said to just keep a close eye on her and call if anything changes or if she gets sick again. She was a little freaked out after getting sick but after a few minutes she went over to her food bowl and started eating and drinking, she played a little bit and now she is back to sleeping.

I just wanted to post to see if anyone else has had a similar experience with their kittens, any additional advice, things I should watch for, etc.. Please let me know.

Thank you!

Hello there

Does sound like a reaction - my cat was 5 when I got him his set of injections all at once (the previous owner couldn't remember the last time he'd had a booster) and he just slept for nearly 48hours. He wasn't so interested in food and I think he ached all over because he couldn't be touched. And then suddenly, he just got his bounce back.  I phoned the vets and they didn't care - so I phoned a different vet and they said too to keep an eye on him and to bring him in next day if no improvement.

They did suggest to do all his vaccinations separately in future with a few weeks apart to avoid him reacting in the same way. And to find out which one (if it was just one) was responsible for the bad reaction. Was it distemper that your kitten was given today? That can bring all the side-effects that you describe and when I googled with my own cat at the time, it seems fairly common.  As the vet says, keep a close eye on her and phone them up/take her in if very worried - am pleased that she is eating and playing a little tho, a great sign.

Hugs

Thank you Fleabags Mom! That is good to hear. She is still a little tired but she is eating and drinking normally, she is just sleepier and snugglier than usual, the vomit just worried me a little, I'm just glad there were no worms in it. The vet receipt said she had her RCPC booster and dewormer. She is feeling a little more playful now and she hasn't gotten sick again or swollen or feverish at all but I plan on keeping a close eye on her. Thank you for the reassurance, I'm sure you know how nerve racking it can be as a first time kitty mom, experiencing all this for the first time.

And thanks for the hugs, even tho it was via forum post, it did make me feel a little better haha

You're welcome, glad hugs helped. And yes, totally understand the nerves! I've grown up with dogs and not had a cat for years until last year.... I still get worried if he's poorly! But that just means we care..... :-)

Enjoy the snuggles from your kitty!

Tinic seems to be feeling much better. She has had a nice appetite all day and seems to have a lot of her energy back. She spent most of the day napping but she is darting around the apartment and back to being her playful little self. So happy to see her behaving like her old self again. Y

Yay!!
