I have a long main coon cat who lately has shown me that he likes to stretch by reaching high up the walls and door frames. He doesn't scratch but you never know when he might claw in. So I've been looking at a 36" natural wood post.

If he likes it and starts using it as his new post do I risk him doing the same on door frames?

The other coons may take to it as well.

I've seen a really tall post in Pet smart but the base looks too small and it's a lot more expensive.

Why not get a wood post and cover it in carpet?

We have a large cat tree in our living room and the legs are wrapped in sisal. Our Tabby is a vertical scratcher; she likes to sit or stretch up on her hind legs and scratch up and down on the tree legs. She really likes the sisal wrapping. We have a sisal-wrapped post hanging from a knob on our hutch and Tabby uses that a lot, too. Might be something for you to try. Your Maine Coon seems to be a vertical scratcher, too.  I'd be hesitant about the wooden posts....I'm not saying that it would start a bad habit, but you never know.

(The reason I mentioned vertical scratching is because, while Tabby likes to stretch up and scratch, Mollipop likes to stretch out and scratch, so I say she is a horizontal scratcher. She'll get on top of our litter box bench cover that's covered in carpet and she'll stretch out lengthwise and scratch that way. But she also likes scratching our bedroom carpet and has created a hole in the carpet from constantly scratching at it. We plan to replace the carpet with a hardwood floor in the near future. You might not want to buy a post or anything with a material on it that you wouldn't want your Maine Coon to scratch at otherwise. Hope that makes sense.)
