OK here it is. My horrifying Before and After picture… Well, maybe not "After" picture, lets just say, this picture just shows my progress to date....My start weight was 240lbs on June 17th, 2003 and today I weigh 185 -a grand total of 55 pounds lost in 3.5 months. (50 more pounds to go)

I can't tell you how much courage it took for me to post this picture. It makes me cry when I look at it. The "before" picture was taken at my worst. I was so depressed and unhealthy I can't believe I even bothered to pose in front of the camera.

Another reason I was a little apprehensive to post this picture is because I seem to be the only one on the board who had the surgery and I didn't know if I would be accepted in weight loss discussions. I don't want anyone to think that I am promoting gastric bypass as the way to go. This surgery is definitely not for everybody. It has been very hard for me, learning to adapt to my stomach being so small. I do want to say that I am VERY proud of all of you who have succeeded losing weight the conventional way... I envy you all. I only wish that it had worked for me, too.

I chose to have the procedure after years of getting sicker. One day I decided that I had enough when my pulmonary doctor diagnosed me with Sleep Apnea. I had already been diagnosed with Acid Reflux disease a month prior. In addition to having those problems, I had already been living with thyroid disease. Pretty crappy for a 35 year old.

At the time, I was working out at the gym 4 days a week while living a low carb lifestyle. Even though I ate only 30 carbs a day (1,200 calories) for a year, I never lost a pound. I worked out so hard at the gym, I fractured the bones in my feet (which is why I am having surgery tomorrow) I became very discouraged because the Atkins diet was my last ditch effort. I had tried everything under the sun to lose weight and I couldn't believe that I was failing again…The bottom line was my health was spiraling downward fast and I had to get help.

I discussed the gastric bypass with my doctor and began researching the procedure intensely for almost a year and a half. My research included meeting people who had the surgery...I wanted to know everything the good, the bad and the ugly. There is a lot to consider when one is seriously thinking of redirecting the landscaping of their digestive system. It is a dangerous procedure and 1 out of 250 die from complications. Even though the odds were scary, I was willing to put my life into the blessed hands of my surgeon. I was afraid of dying prior to surgery because of my worsening condition, the fact that I could die from the surgery was an acceptable risk to me. This surgery gave me a second chance to re-gain my health and get my life back.

Since the surgery my sleep apnea and acid reflux have been completely cured. My thyroid is stable, my blood work checks out great. I, on the other hand, am still learning how to live with all of the rules that go along with having the surgery because it has been a life changing event.

Please be kind in your comments directed to me as I was flamed on another board for trying to be brave. I consider all of you my friends and would appreciate the same consideration back...Now, if you do flame me I will photoshop your cats and make them look like dogs, LMAO (just kidding)

Kim I applaud your courage for posting this, and your strength for making such a life-altering decision. I know you did not make this decision overnight, or on a whim, and I also know you struggle everyday to stay on the right course so as not to further endanger your health!

Phew! Now I think I worded that right and my cats are safe from your revenge!

Love ya Kim!

OMG Kim, you are so brave for doing this! I have nothing but respect for you.
Now I have tears in my eyes!
You really look fabulous now! I mean, you really do.
Reading about your reasons for doing this - it really makes sense and I can understand that. I know some people think that it is a drastic procedure to lose weight but you have obviously researched this thoroughly and knew of the risks and side effects. There is no reason to flame you, none at all.

I bow my head to you for putting yourself through this. Fantastic. You are absolutely beautiful and remember that!

You must feel so wonderful now, with the improvement in your health.

I think you look great now. Gastric By pass sounds like a really scarey proceedure. You can only eat just tiny little bits of food, right? I knew a lady who had it, and she was always getting sick to her stomach. She said it had to do with the fact that she ate too much, and that you always get sick, if you eat too much. Will you ever be able to eat normal portions of food? I mean what happens, once you've lost the weight and gotten to your goal? Is there a way to maintain the weight you want, without continuing to lose?

The one woman (the talk show host) I forget her name, looks just beautiful, now that she's lost her weight.

Kim, you look terrific! I know very little about the procedure you had done, but I do know it's not for everyone and can be very dangerous. I'm glad it worked out for you and that you were able to make it to a healthier weight. It sounds like it has cured a lot of medical problems you were experiencing too.

I don't know why anyone would flame you for posting about your experience on the other board. You should be proud of what you've accomplished - the surgery doesn't take away the hard work you have to go through, it's not an easy way out.

I really am happy for you, and you really do look fantastic.

Oh, Kellye, thank you!
I can't tell you how nervous I was to post this… Thank you for being so understanding!

Hope - Thank you, too. Gastric Bypass is a scary procedure, that's for sure. I can eat, pretty much, anything just very small portions. A regular plate looks like a turkey platter to me these days, LOL! I haven't been sick at all since the surgery like others have reported... as a matter of fact, in our support group, I haven't met a soul who have had major complications either.

As far as maintaining once I reach my goal... Well, I will always have to watch my caloric intake. Over time, my new stomach will stretch out to maybe 4 ounces, as it is only an ounce right now. The thing is... I will never be able to consume the portions I once did. That will make my maintenance easier.

Kim, I have to echo what Kellye said. I think you are very brave to have this procedure done. It isn't something to take lightly, and you obviously did your homework and knew the good, bad and ugly. It is also one thing for someone try to lose weight and complain about not being able to just because they don't like how they look. But when it could literally be life or death to lose the weight NOW, you have to sometimes take drastic measures. Tough decision, but I can tell by your post that you know in your heart that you made the right choice for you.

And I also have to say you look fab-u-lous! (Just add the snaps. LOL)

i think you look great!!!

the kind of procedure you went through is nothing to flame at or look down on. some people just cannot lose weight no matter what they do. its something like genetics involved. I knew a guy who did what you did and he lost a lot of weight. but he is probably going to experience some difficulty because he is falling back into eating a lot again, and also drinking a lot. I am not sure how he is doing now but I assume he is still ok.

gastric bypass is a legit procedure that has great benefits. it takes a lot of courage to go through with it. I am a little pudgy myself, I'd say 20 pounds overweight (140@5ft2), but that is due to my lifestyle. I could probably lose if I worked out and dieted. but some people just cant and its not their fault.

you look and feel better now because of your procedure. thats what matters.

Thank you all for being so understanding and allowing me to post such a sensitive topic. I haven't been able to talk about it to very many people without receving negative comments for making this decision... needless to say, for the past few months I just kept it to myself. It was very therapeutic for me to post this among friends—Again, I thank you all!

I have conducted several psychological evaluations of women who were wanting to have this surgery. (A psychological evaluation is part of the requirements of getting approval for the procedure.) Therefore I know that (1) you are a psychologically healthy lady or else they wouldn't have done it and (2) you had to have been very ill in order for them to consider this drastic surgery. They will not do the surgery for the wrong reasons (just wanting to be skinny for example) and won't do it unless the person is psychologically strong enough to handle life after recovering from the surgery.

Kim, I applaud you and think that you are one heck of a brave lady for doing this. Bravo!!!

lotsocats - I am glad you brought that up. True, it is very hard to qualify for the surgery and some people don't realize that there has to be medical necessity in order to proceed with such an invasive procedure. I had to complete 8 months worth of pre-testing prior to surgery, my psych evaluation being one of the most intense.

I Thank you from the bottom of my heart!

I was flamed so bad on the "Other" board that the moderator deleted the thread and banned the flamers… that's why I was so gun shy...

All I can say is that the people from that board would never pass one of my psychological evaluations!

Kim, you look awesome! Woo hoo!!!

I have been considering gastric bypass for several months now (Kim already knows this!). My insurance covers it, and I am pretty well certain I will pass the qualifications for it. I go to the gym, work out, and GAIN weight!
I've had high blood pressure for 15 yrs, sleep apnea for 5 yrs and gastroesophageal reflux for 3 yrs. Enough already, I am only 36!

My problems are 1) I need to save up the $2000 deductible and 2) I need to save up days off from work so I can have at least 3 weeks off after surgery.

A co-worker of mine had this surgery in January 2003 and has lost 70 lbs, she looks awesome!
