Hello!

So I heard that kittens don't like catnip until a certain age. Can anyone give me a range of when my kitty might start to like it? And should I not use catnip toys until my kitty is older?

Thanks!

When a kitten is old enough to be playing, theyre old enough for catnip.

Only 65% of cats actually react to it, this is to different degrees too.

Some get bonkers, some will nibble on it. Some will not care either way.

No need to keep catnip toys away.

How old are you talking about for your kitten?

My kitten is 3 months old. I knew that not every cat likes catnip, but I thought might have something to do with her age.

Some cats are actually much older (around a year) before they develop a taste for catnip, and sometimes it depends on the quality of the catnip itself. Mogli (17 months) is just now coming around to it and valerian root. Our last cat avoided it like the plague until he was just over a year old, and even then he only liked certain types, which rarely included the catnip plants in our yard that attract just about every cat in the neighborhood. Some like fresh catnip, while others only like dried.

I've heard that they can respond to it anywhere between 6 months to 2 years. And some don't respond at all.

I think you are both correct about the age.

I do remember seeing kittens react to it, somewhat at least, but they might have been at least 3 months or so.

Maybe it varies a bit? Hard to pinpoint when I suppose.

jcat - Well, it's good to hear stories like that! I mean, it wouldn't be bad if she didn't, but it sure would be convenient if she did. Thanks!

moggymomma - Thanks! My cat has a lot of growing until 2 years, so I'll try again after 6 months.

Also, I have found the same thing, many don't respond to fresh but love the dry, if you do get the dry be sure it is not old/stale, but fresh dry.

It sort of loses it's potency with age/air exposure.

Have fun!

And Catwoman707 - I imagined it might vary a lot. My kitty is only 3 months so I think I still have a chance of her liking it at some point.
