Wow. Just wow. I'm on the quest to find budget friendly canned food w/o carrageenan and I came across this...

Natural Balance L.I.D. Limited Ingredient Diets Duck & Green Pea Formula Canned Cat Food

If your furry feline has a sensitivity to fillers and additives found in most canned cat food, Natural Balance L.I.D. Green Pea & Duck Formula is the perfect choice! Duck meat, duck broth, duck liver, and real peas provide the vitamins and minerals needed, with no grains or fillers Tigger wouldn’t eat in the wild. Limited Ingredient Diets are great for cats of any age with food sensitivities, or for owners that want a simple, wholesome, natural meal for their pet. They are rich in antioxidants, vitamins, and minerals needed for a long, healthy life. Vet recommended, too!

Key Benefits
  • Carrageenan protects against kitty colds
  • Yucca Schidigera Extract reduces odor in stool
  • Made without grains or common proteins that trigger many cats' allergies
  • Easily digested
  • Taurine promotes heart health
They list carrageenan as a substance that protects again kitty colds. I thought it was considered carcinogenic?

Too much carrageenan can be toxic, according to a scientific report I just read.  I'm guessing too much of most things can be toxic.  Carrrageenan is actually made from seaweed, which is usually considered healthy.  At least they sell it in healthy food stores as "super greens stuff"

Anyway, per the report I just read, it IS considered a homemade remedy for coughs and colds too!  Who'd have though it?

Here is a thread about carrageenan from last year that you might find interesting:  http://www.thecatsite.com/t/246168/the-truth-about-carrageenan

But that thread was discussing why it's good to avoid carrageenan. I think the issue with carrageenan has to do with whether it is degraded or undegraded. Degraded has the most concern for health issues. We really don't know if pet food companies are using degraded or undegraded and the difference is VERY important. Basically, cat's just don't need carrageenan. I think the claim that "carrageenan helps kitty colds" is preposterous. A healthy cat helps kitty colds.

Yes, it's said to have health benefits, among them antiviral activity.

Here's the Wiki on it: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carrageenan There's a section on its antiviral activity and related studies:

"Studies at the Laboratory of Cellular Oncology, National Cancer Institute, Bethesda, Maryland, United States of America suggest that carrageenans might function as a topical microbicide. Laboratory studies revealed a broad spectrum antiviral activity of carrageenan.[12]"

And here's an article about the questions surrounding it: http://articles.chicagotribune.com/...0318_1_doubts-surface-fda-scientists-u-s-food

Dr. Weil's summary of Dr. Tobacman's work: http://www.drweil.com/drw/u/QAA401181/Is-Carrageenan-Safe.html

Crazy. I'm just not sure the health "benefits" would be worth the risk of cancer. Feeding cats is a pain in the butt!! ;-)

I won't feed my cat any cat canned wet food that has carrageenan in it. My take on carrageenan is, "better safe than sorry" for my 16 year old best bud.
