Hi everyone
I feed my two 8 month olds on a mixture of dry and canned the below UK brands:

Dry
Vets kitchen - chicken grain free
Hills science diet - chicken

Wet
Lily's cat food
Hills science diet pate
Almo chicken and pumpkin

I am looking for other recommendations , particularly of cheaper alternatives and also the best widely available supermarket brand for times where I can't order online or get to the vet for the above.

Purina One, iams, Sheba, Felix, whiskers, gourmet gold and encore are the brands available in most supermarkets here.

Looking forward to hearing advice from other UK owners!

I can't help you with supermarket brands, but you could take a look at Animonda Carny, Bozita, Catz Finefood and Thrive canned foods. Thrive is similar to Almo, but a complete food, rather than just a supplemental one. Bozita is inexpensive, especially in the large cans.

Mine survive on cheap own brand tinned food and kibbles - whatever's on offer this week - as I have too many cats and not enough money.  Apart from my old lady who is 20 and on her last legs who gets Sheba and Gourmet gold and Wainwrights, and all the expensive pates in tiny tins.  Its not that I think they're any better, just that they must be tastier and easier to eat as she's become very fussy.  I have to feed her somewhere alone or the other three steal it off her.

I've always only given dry food. My last order from my 'petman' he added a small tin of wet food. I thought and thought and this is what I do.
At bedtime I take a little and put it on a plate. Warm it up in the microwave and there's two little heads over the plate. The night after I'd given them that I got nagged all of a sudden. A lot of meows, following me and even going to the microwave. Well I'm very obedient. Now I'm going to have to buy little tins of wet food. This is only a treat. I give dry as they graze and it doesn't go off and better for their teeth and yes they do drink enough.

Of course that doesn't help you. Does your nearest supermarket deliver? Tesco or sainsbury etc. The best ones of the lower price is I think without cereal so own makes might be good. I use pro plan. .
