Hi--trying to stay purely scientific with the language here,

My cat is 1.5 years old now and was neutered at eight weeks. about four days ago i noticed a small black spot on what I now believe to be, after googling diagrams, his penis. I tried to clean it with baby wipes to see if it could be dried blood but he gets violent when people try to touch his rear end (such a boy cat thing to do). I have no idea what else it could be, or what's causing it. he is eating, drinking, pooping and peeing and otherwise behaving just fine, so I hope that it's not a big deal.

i understand that this is probably a question for the vet, but i am wondering if anyone has had a similar experience and could give me a heads up about what the problem might be.

Well, are you sure it's his penis
.  I have to tell you, I have had many cats, and have only seen ONE of their penises, because they are usually "sheathed", I guess is the word.  (they are normally very hidden).  And when they are neutered, they don't do anything with the penis, so there shouldn't be any dried blood on it.

Could what you are seeing just be a freckle (on whatever)?

He's an orange cat, but the spot is definitely on his fur, around the spot where he was neutered, and it only appeared recently. For those reasons, I do not think it's a freckle.

OK, this changes things a whole lot.  I think we all thought this was on the his skin, because when you said penis, that actually doesn't have any fur on it.  My guess is that it's a little piece of dried poop, but since he won't let anyone near his rear end, it's going to be hard for you to find out.

Has he been acting constipated at all?  It's possible this is a small drop of dried blood, which could be from him constipated, but if that were the case, you would probably notice some blood in/on his stools.   I really don't think it's anything to worry about as long as he's acting normal.  What I would say is you could probably just call your Vet for peace of mind and ask if you should be worried, or you could just keep an eye on him and see if more  of whatever it is accumulates.

i should have been more clear--the spot is exactly where you'd expect his cat penis to be hidden. really, it's right on his (empty) testicle sack. my best guess, therefore, is that some kind of blackish discharge or blood is coming out of his penis and sticking onto his fur back there. and that possibility concerns me.

i really don't think it's poop because it's not around his anus, where dingleberries generally form. and, he's good about cleaning up.

he pees and poops as normal, and i haven't seen any blood in the litterbox.

thanks everyone for your help so far.

Orange cats are very prone to black spots on spots like their lips, etc.  A photo might help, but if you're really concerned, a vet visit might be in order just to calm your fears.

I'll bet it was difficult to take, but you did a fabulous job
!  I gotta  tell you, this looks absolutely like a normal male cat's backside to me, however, if you are telling us that his "male part" didn't used to be black, then we'll have to believe you.   Also, I'm a little concerned about those secretions around it.  I currently have two males and previously had males, and have never noticed secretions like that.  I'm going to see if @catbehaviors might take a look at this and see what she thinks.  I thinks she's an orange cat person, so might be more in the know all around on this one.  My two guys are black to begin with, so that's not much help

But if you have doubt at all, now that you have this great picture, maybe you could just email it to your Vet and ask them what it could be that's happening...

I'm afraid that I don't have any new advice to give on this subject, the other posters have really covered everything that I would say already. :)

I'm not quite clear on if it's actually his fur/skin that has changed color, or if it appears to be something external? Do you know what is making his fur stick together in those little globs?

no idea what's causing the fur to stick together. some kind of secretion. the black spot was not there until about two weeks ago. i am afraid that it's some kind of abnormal penis secretion, as above poster suggested. but we're going to the vet this weekend for ear mites anyway, so i'll let her check it out. thanks everyone for your help !

hi. unfortunately, my cat gave himself an A+ bath before we made it to the vet so she couldn't check it out. i showed her the picture and she couldn't say what it was for sure, but she did a full exam and didn't find anything unusual. he's neutered and has no trouble peeing so i'm not worried anymore. also i haven't seen the spot again since.

if you're going to get to a vet to see what's up with your cat, i would really appreciate if you could come back here and share.

Update: had to go to the vet again for anal gland expression (gov has issues) and the vet gave me a better idea of what's going on with him and his penis. other commenters were right, it is a totally normal penis. the secretions, my vet said, were nothing to worry about and likely present because my cat is too fat to be cleaning himself properly. oops!! he's 17 pounds but we need him to get down to 14. wish me luck with that.

she speculated that it wasn't a UTI because i said he had normal peeing and drinking habits, about two average sized clumps a day. she was not able to get a urine sample but i might go back with one just to make sure (i believe she said the secretions might have been due to crystallization in the urine).

Hello, I'm having this same problem and I researched what it could be and this thread came up. Charlie is 5 months old today and has Not been neutered yet. I kept noticed a black dot there as he walked away and I only just started to check it more closely but he's so squirmy he wont let me stay there long. I havent tried to wipe it with a wet cloth yet to see if it comes off...any luck with what happened to the others in this thread with that problem?

This thread is quite old, so you may not get any responses on what the issue was. Can you send this picture to your Vet and ask them if they have any thoughts on what might be happening? Charlie is about due for his neutering anyway, isn't he? Perhaps you can discuss that at the same time?

Thank you, I was thinking the same. He gets neutered in one month...it seems like dirt but it's hard and I cant get it off...I took a better photo. His pee hole is not blocked though and he seems to be playing like normal and going to the bathroom normally. I appreciate you responding.

i just checked again with my cat when saw this topic , my new orange/white cat have matted fur, black dirt around his penis area, i just shaved those mats fur once but today i noticed it gotten darker dirt around that area

so i think it's because he's lazy cleaning himself or something?
