When I got home from work the other day I noticed that my cat had a patch of fur missing from his back. I took him to the vet to see what was going on and she said he just scratched himself on something, probably under my bed. She told me to just put Polysporin/Ozonol on it and it'll heal in a few days and the fur will grow back.

Fast forward a few days later, and I've given up putting anything on it since he'll lick it right away. He ended up licking off the scab as well.. I imagine this has to do with with Polysporin and now that I'll stop it should HOPEFULLY scab up and heal on its own.

Was hoping that people here had any advice to give on how to stop him from licking a certain spot. I thought a bandage could do it, but he just wiggles out of it as I expected he would.

My vet it closed until tomorrow morning, so I was hoping to get some advice here before calling in tomorrow.

Thanks!

Hello and welcome to TCS.

If he is not aggravating it further, ie chewing or scratching at the area, I'd let it be and just let it heal on it's own. His licking it is keeping it clean and you can use warm water to clean it a couple of times a day also. Just keep an eye on it for any signs of infection. The only options to prevent him licking the spot is a collar or possibly a tube sweater.

Thanks for the reply.

So I should just let him lick it? My girlfriend said she may have a collar at home, and so I might have that option.

If it is a superficial scratch (not deep, no stitches), I myself would just let it be. Watch it, clean it a couple of times a day, and yes, just let it alone, as long as he is not making it worse. If he is making it worse, then I'd try the collar if you have one available.

And the little bugger's wearing a collar. Kind of looks sad and pathetic, but on the other hand, kind of looks hilarious.
