Hello, I am new to this site and originally joined when I bought two gorgeous rescue kittens five days ago.  Hector was so tiny and his eyes were still blue.  He was pure black and the 'cat shelter person' said people don't want all black cats!  He wanted holding all the time (under my chin) or inside a cardigan.  Two days ago we put him and his 'brother from another mother' to bed and the next morning Hector was limp and mewling.  I rushed him to the vets who said that he was in shock from a probably infection that had spread to his blood and had a 50/50 chance of surviving.  He was put on oxygen and IV fluids but three hours later the vet called me to tell me my beautiful black bundle of fluff had died.  I had had him for only a couple of days but he had certainly got into my heart.  His 'brother from another Mother' is called Beans and is a shamelessly cute ginger kitten with white bits.  He is about 8 weeks old and just starting to 'prowl and pounce'.  My sons and I took it in turns the first night after Hector's death at setting our alarms to check on Beans in case he had caught the infection but thankfully he is perfect.

So a little about Beans ... he uses the litter tray when he wants?!  We have had a few accidents and have tried putting bits of food in his preferred toilet places to stop him.  Have restricted him to the dining room with two litter trays, praised him when he uses them etc.  Today I thought we had perfected it until I went out and left him in the living room to return one hour later to a 'present'!! grrr.  He eats very small amounts FREQUENTLY and loves the kitten milk as a treat.  Since his brothers death he has become much more sociable and affectionate.

A little bit about me ... my name is Lorraine and I am a Nurse.  Years ago we had two other rescue kittens who lived a long and full life.  This time round it seems so much harder .... is that because I am older! grr.  I have two grown sons who live with me aged 20 and 23.  The youngest said he was not bothered about having any kittens but when I go to bed I can hear him talking and playing with the kitten - ha! he is a softy but won't admit it.  Beans seems to love him too.

Well that is really all I have to say for now.  Any suggestions about litter training would be appreciated.

Hi, welcome to TCS!  It's lovely to meet you.  I am so sorry to hear about Hector; a very similar and sad thing happened to us once years ago.

I'm probably not the best at giving advice on litter training, but I am sure there are members on here who can offer helpful advice.  You may want to try posting in either the health or behavior forums.

Thank you, I will try that tomorrow.  Hope he finds the litter trays during the night and decides to use them instead of carpet!
