Some of you may recall my thread from quite a while ago titled "Lanie is wasting away."  My oldest girl (now 7 - wow! does time fly) had wasted from 9 pounds to 6 in the course of a year because she threw up anything and everything I fed her.  I discovered raw food in the course of that thread - and again, a huge shout-out to everyone who replied, y'all were so helpful and supportive!

Unfortunately raw food wasn't practical for my living situation for a number of reasons that I was unable to overcome, though it stopped the vomiting and she started putting weight back on.  So I did a lot more research on "healthy" dry foods and digestive enzymes.  After going through a number of bags of "healthy" dry cat food that they wouldn't touch (I don't blame them - it didn't smell like any food or cat food I'd ever taken a whiff of), I settled back on the same old Blue Wilderness that they've loved for so long.  Only this time, along with sticking with the egg lecithin to minimize hairballs, I added a digestive enzyme that had great reviews and sounded like the best I could find.  It has been amazing to us.  Now the only puke I find on the floor is regurgitated food caused by eating too fast (and we're ...working on that).

The Digestive Enzyme I'm mentioning with the highest regards is Dr. Mercola Healthy Pets Digestive Enzymes for Pets.  I'm very sparing with recommendations, especially those for products where I don't understand how the ingredients work.  I was also originally concerned that it was not formulated specifically for cats.  But, though it smells slightly bitter, the cats don't mind at all when we dust the powder on their food, and it's kept Lanie healthy and happy for many months now.  At one point I was considering possibly having to adopt her out to someone who could feed her raw food, so that she could live a long, healthy life - which broke my heart.  Her success with these enzymes was such a blessing.

The website that gives you information on enzymes in general, and this brand in particular, is located at:

http://healthypets.mercola.com/sites/healthypets/digestive-enzymes-for-pet.aspx

I bought a three-pack deal months ago, and have just passed the halfway point on the first container.  I was afraid that, like raw food, these enzymes would eat up my bank account, and have been pleasantly surprised by both the price and longevity of each container.

While this isn't a knowledge-based intellectual run-down on enzymes and how they work, I hope this helps those who have been wondering what type of enzyme to buy.

Thanks for the post - I am sure it will be helpful to many.

Your situation sounds like my Boo - she went from 11 lbs to 8 lbs in several months - was throwing up the dry food she was eating. I tried raw with her, but she was so fickle about it.  I eventually found a good canned food (Nutro Natural Choice) she loves and will eat consistently.  She's done so much better in every way since the switch from dry to canned - increased energy, playfulness - an NO puke on the floor 2-3x a week.  So nice.

The Mercola brand is a pancreatic animal enzyme. You should mention this to your vet, s/he may want to test the pancreas.
