My baby Catsby is a year old. Last month my roommate's cat brought fleas into the apartment and Catsby got a few. We cleaned the apartment with powder and washed both cats and they were clean except for a couple bites. Within a few days Catsby had scratched her neck, ears, and scruff to the point of bleeding. I gave her a bath again and trimmed the hair around the sores. Since then I have been cleaning them and trying to keep her from itching. I thought she would have healed by now but they're just as bad. When I called my friends mom whos a vet she said it was probably an allergic reaction and would go away but she may need a cortisone shot. I cannot afford a shot right now seeing how its $150 at my vet and I am in college. Are there anyways these sores can heal?

Hi and welcome to TCS. Are you sure the fleas are gone? Generally, you need to be diligent about vacuuming and combing out fleas for weeks because of the life cycle of fleas. You can't get rid all of the fleas and eggs in one go. She may definitely have a flea allergy as well. She does need a vet visit or at least a call to a vet to see if they will sell you flea meds. In the meantime, you can sprinkle food-grade diatomaceous earth around your home and then vacuum.  A flea collar in your vacuum bag will work, too. Do NOT use flea collars or over the counter flea meds on cats as they are NOT safe. Also, since she has had fleas, she will most likely get tapeworms from the fleas.  Your vet will need to give you medication for that. BOTH cats need to be treated.

Thank you! We have been spraying the carpets and vacuuming but her itching hasn't stopped. I've never heard of the tapeworms coming because of fleas but I'll take her in and get checked! Thank you again.
