9kg cat's path to 6kg - advise needed.

Quick background check on him.

He was my step mum's cat who 2 years ago was 6kg, vet said he was healthy. My step mum got cancer, and due to treatment she over feed him as she wasn't able to feed him for days, so she gave him too much food. He gained 3kg in 2 years.

My step mum has just passed away from the cancer, and we have now taken him on with our 4 healthy boys, all at right weights.

All this cat eat was "purina one", I plan to get him on wet food, and smaller amounts of dry. - Would this get his weight down?

would it be best to feed him on his own?

would a goal to loose 1kg by christmas too much?
