Hey everyone.

I'm a volunteer at my local animal shelter, and this weekend when I went in for my shift, I met a little kitten named Mew. She's about 3-4 months old if I had to guess, and she's just the cutest thing ever. Later on, I overheard some of the staff mention that she may need to be put down. I asked why, and was told that Mew has chronic diarrhea, and they couldn't determine what was wrong. She's been for blood tests and stool samples, all of which turned up fine. The only thing they detected was a slight elevation in white blood cells. She seems like a very active, healthy kitten to me. She eats her food right down and loves to play. At the shelter, they are feeding her Royal Canin Gastro Intestinal hard food. Now, my question for you guys is, does this sound like a problem that can be solved by a simple change in food. I mean, the first thing that came to my head was maybe she has IBS, or a food allergy. I purchased some Grain Free canned food (Wellness and Natures Variety Instinct) and was hoping to drop some off at the shelter and suggesting they give her a chance on this new food for a bit before they make any decisions. Does anyone else have any suggestions on things we can try with this little kitten??? Any advice is always appreciated!

It's possible that the stress of the shelter is contributing to the situation.  However, she might have a food allergy or tritrichomonas foetus.  Testing for TF requires a special test.  Most likely it can be managed, but without knowing exactly what's going on, there's no way to know at this stage.  I have a kitty who cannot tolerate a totally grain-free diet.  He gets Royal Canin Gastro HE dry for his dry food.  We do feed him mostly grain free canned, but when he's totally grain free, he gets diarrhea and soft stools again.
