OKay - following my encounter with the frog, Carol tells me I should tell you about my meeting with a snake some years ago in a local pet shop that still remembers the incident - to this day.

I went into the pet store to get some sawdust, I forget what the hell for but I must have needed it as a kid (12 - 14 I think in age).
In the store is a huge area for fish and I love looking at them and the colors they have in the tropical section. Well right next to the fish is a huge glass house sort of thing - like a cage with nothing but a massive log - hollow in it and leant up against the glass.
There was nothing in the cage ( if you can call it that) and I searched high and low for whatever it was in there. I checked the top of the glass, nothing. I checked the bottom of the log - nowt there neither, in fact bar a tree log at about 45 degrees that was against the glass there was nothing at all.
I was not convinced at all and kept coming back and staring and watching for anything. You dont have a cage and nothing in it right?
So I gets real brave and I get my nose and eyes right up to the hollowed out end leaning against the glass and keenly I look in to the darkness. Nothing - then movement.
With that this bloody huge snakes head came out - looked at me, I looked back at it and its tongue thing came out.

Apparently what happened next is recorded forever on security camera as well as etched on the minds of all the staff. I have no recollection of it.

I passed out and the world went black - I feinted there in front of a whole store of people. My legs went from under me and the darkness came in.

I fell backward and onto the large bag of sawdust hiiting my head on the tiles and drawing blood. In that second that I hit the ground, I landed on my back, onto the sawdust - whereas the air all moved to one end and the bag went bang.

The area vanished in a cloud of shavings and dust and I in the middle of it was covered. The blood flowed well that day and when I came round, I was being helped outside into the fresh air.

It was not the strongest day in my lfe and my first encounter with something that has less legs than me.

The store manager still there still gives me a ribbing when we see him. The snake was sold later that day - was about 8 inches long and was completely harmless. To me that head and tounge was at least 10 feet plus long and it was huge.

Not the strongest day in my life!

Kev, my father has the biggest fear of snakes. Now this is a man who is the epitome of a United States Marine - tough to say the least. I've seen him carry a baby garder snake at arm's length on the end of a shovel (because us two girls wouldn't let him kill it) out of the basement.
We still give him a ration of hell about that whenever we think about it!

Movin' on up!
I am ophidiophobic, too. It took a great act of will, to take my kids into the snake room, at the Desert Museum. This was to show them EXACTLY what they were NEVER to go near. Even behind thick glass, I cannot get near a snake.

Because there are no snakes in NZ, I get so excited when I see a snake - I am so fascinated with them

i dont think snakes are bad. I used to have a garter sanke when I was little but my mom made me bring it back because my grandma said snakes were part of the devil.

now spiders...spiders are yucky. i like to look at them and i think they are cool only if I know they cant get to me, like on the other side of glass. but other than that, no thanks. I totally freak out.

arachnaphobia anyone?

sorry about your ordeal kev!
