Last night when I got off work I was enjoying my shift beer on the patio when I noticed a little kitten running around in the bushes across the street. Afraid that she would get hit by a car or freeze I spent about 20 minutes trying to catch the little sweetie. I finally caught her, she was little scared at first but after holding her for a few minutes she snuggled up and buried her head in my arms and my heart melted; so I put her in a box and brought her home. I got her all set up with a nice warm bed, litter box, and gave her water and some soft kitten food. My boyfriend is friends with a vet who has given me some great advice but I am a first time cat owner/adopter/foster parent and I was wondering if anyone had any tips. I have given her a bath and I have been handling her frequently and playing with her. She is a little calico kitten about 6 weeks old and I decided that since I found her at the Irish pub where I work that I would name her Tinick. She is getting used to me but she still hisses a little bit when I go to pick her up but stops as soon as I touch her and doesn't try to bite or anything like that. This little darling has me smitten and I would love for her to bond with me. I am a college student with no children or other animals. I feel like there is hope that she will get acclimated but I just want to make sure I am taking all the proper steps to making sure that she feels safe and comfortable.

I have already:

- bathed her once with a little bit of dial body wash in warm water

- been feeding her every 3 to 4 hours and putting her in her litter box to potty a few minutes after she finishes (which she has done successfully each time)

- been handling her frequently and playing with her

- changed the bedding after giving her a bath

- Isolated her in the bathroom because of her fleas (I didn't see many but I just want to be careful) but I sit in there and play with her a lot

My boyfriend's vet friend said that I can take her to the vet for shots and things in about a week. if anyone has anything else to add your input would be greatly appreciated.

It seems you did found yourself a friend for the next 15 years or so.  It seems to go excellently!

Tx a lot for caring!

Good luck and welcome to our Forums!

That really is a delightful story and I'm sure your little girl will settle down and become a much loved member of your household and a lifetime companion.  You  are very lucky to have casual contact with a friendly vet and I'm sure he'll advise you of when its time to get her fixed.  In the meantime she'll need to get rid of her fleas - and possibly worms - and your vet will recommend some spot-on medication to do that job.

Do enjoy her - what have you called her?

I have decided to name her Tinic BBarb. I treated her for fleas and they are all dead, I also bagged up all my clothes and washed them and Tinic and I are going to get out of the house for a few hours tonight so I can bomb the house. I haven't seen any fleas on me or anywhere in the house but that doesn't mean they aren't there. We have an appointment with the vet already to get her wormed, get her boosters, and tested.

As far as her adapting, things are going really well. She is very playful and snuggly. She runs right up to me when I see her and it is the best feeling in the world. It has been expensive to make sure she is healthy and get her settled but it's worth every penny. It means the world to me that she is happy and feels loved.

Aww, it sounds like you two are bonded already. She sounds like a real sweetheart. Thanks for rescuing her.

Thanks vball91! I have been spending as much time as I can with her. She is an absolute doll and I am so glad I rescued her. My family had a cat when I was little but I have never had one of my own so I was a little nervous at first but things are going really well. I have her isolated in the bathroom until I take her to the vet so I can't wait until she can freely roam around and feel truly at home. I got her a little collar with a bell on it so I don't step on her and she is doing really well with it. I got a quick release collar so she doesn't get stuck in it but I have been keeping an eye on her while she wears it just in case.

Thank you all for your kind words and support, it is really helpful and much appreciated. Joining this forum was such a good idea!
