Yesterday, I got a call from my friend, the supreme cat rescuer. Her husband recently had a stroke, so she needed my help with a stray. I got the kitty and put her in my shed, which is equipped with three large crates attached to one another. I call it my en suite. Anyway, poor kitty is bag of bones skinny. I fed her some wet kitten food, which she inhaled. Just as I came back inside, my neighbor knocked on the door and told me that another neighbor had moved and left their cat! I went over and found him huddled at the back door, crying. He's in good shape and so sweet. I was able to put him in a section of my outdoor enclosure that has it's own little house and potty.
Anyway, on the way back to my house with the carrier in my hand, a third neighbor stopped me and asked me if I could take her kitten. Their landlord had made a surprise visit and because their lease says "no cats", she had "to get rid of it". This neighbor and the one who abandoned the cat are the only renters on our street, thank goodness.
All this was stressful enough but the thing that lit my torch was this woman's daughter. She has a 4 year old who she constantly screams at (so much so the police have been called). She came downstairs and started ranting against the landlord, her mother, the world. They apparently have another cat, who is 13 years old but who hides, so the landlord has never seen it. This girl said all their problems would be solved if they'd "just get rid of fatso here," pointing to the older cat.
I looked her in the eye and asked her if she would "get rid" of her daughter if she had another child. Thankfully, she said no, very indignantly. I told her that was because that was the responsible thing to do - as they should do for their pets as well. She flounced off but her mother burst out laughing. I fear I've made an enemy but I had obviously had it. I couldn't help them with the kitten, unfortunately. I already have two foster kittens on my porch and now two other cats. Geez - it never ends.
I just got back from the vet with the skinny cat. She weighs about seven pounds and should probably weigh nine or ten. She had hookworms and an infection (coughing). She's too thin for shots, so I am going to keep her for a few weeks to get her ready for her vaccinations and spaying. There is a chance she's pregnant, too, poor thing.
I could use some vibes - a) for her health and b) to find them both responsible homes.
Thanks - I feel better!
