I had someone contact me about a kitten in a bad situation. Her leg is believed to be broken, and they don't want to pay for whatever needs to be done and said they will most likely euthanize her if they don't find her a home quickly.

I'm willing to take her, but I'm wondering what options are with broken legs? Is it common that they are ever casted and healed? I have no information to what type of break it is. Will it most likely have to be amputated? I do have funds but I'm not sure if I have enough for her. Anybody know what my options might be?

A cast is very possible. Amputation would be for a worst case scenario. It really depends on the type of break and where it's located which no one will be able to tell without an x-ray. Thanks for considering taking on the care of this kitten.

theres also the option of putting a pin or plate in the break. Thats what we did with our six month old kitten who has a spiral fracture in her femur. It requires surgery and quite a bit of pain medication afterwards but if it can be fixed rather than taking the poor things leg away all together or even worse case putting her down I would say it is worth it. The only way you will know is by contacting your vet or another local vet and say you are considering taking in a kitten with a broken limb and want an idea of what treatment options are available to you and a rough cost. I think amputation is a very extreme reaction to a break unless the bone is quite frankly crushed beyond repair.

We had a kitten come in about 2 yrs ago with a broken hind leg (broken in 2 places.) He was put in a cast for 6 wks and confined to a large dog crate. We were told that with his type of injury he may or may not heal completely and may ultimately need surgery. However, at his 6 wk x-ray, he had healed completely.

He had to go in for cast changes every 5 days (more if it got wet/dirty.) He initially had cast changes every 2 days as we were also trying to litter box train him and with him learning to walk in the cast...well, we'll just say things were very messy for the 1st week. =\
