Many vets will use medications off label, especially when treating a large number of cats.  One Extra large dog revolution vial will treat 8 cats that are 5 to 15 lbs.  This ONLY applies to Revolution. Many products approved for dogs are NOT safe and can kill your cat.

Here is a chart on Revolution dosing

http://www.sheltermedicine.com/documents/selamectin-revolution-dosing-chart

Revolution is easy to divide up.  A 5-15lb cat only needs 0.38 ml of Revolution.  In the dog revolution, it uses the same concentration, but just adds more liquid to increase the dose.  In other words, if you measure the dog revolution for cats, each cat would only need 0.38 ML regardless of which size doggy package you get.

To prove this point:

If I get the X large doggy size package, it contains 3.0 mL, divided by 8 cat doses = 0.375 ML per dose ( but rounded up to 0.38 for easy measuring).

If I get the Large dog size package, it contains 2.0 ML per vial, divided by 5.3333 cat doses = 0.375 ML per dose

(Where did the 5.33333 come from?  240 mg per doggy dose/45 mg dose per cat =5.33333)

The same with the other doggy packages.  The dose for a cat is ALWAYS 0.38 ML for a 5-15lb cat.

But how do you measure 0.38ML?    You either need to buy a 1CC (aka 1 ML) syringe and estimate 0.38ML, or you can buy a 0.5 CC insulin syringe.   Insulin syringes have a needle attached, so after measuring the amount of Revolution you need, the needle will need to be CUT OFF before applying it to the cat.

If you have any questions about using Doggy Revolution on cats always ask your vet.  Reading syringes correctly can be tricky for some people. If in doubt- ASK THE VET.

You need a script from a vet anyway!  So before you do this with your cat colony, talk to your vet first!   You can also divide up the dosage depending on your exact cat's weight ( for exactly a 10lb cat), but that makes it a lot more complicated.

Definitely get your vets advice if you are dosing kittens.

We do the same thing with the Frontline for dogs. We checked and the Frontline for dogs has the very same ingredients for cats. We measure it out and do them all for far less money. I guess if people don't want to measure it out they can buy the measured does just for cats, but it's way more expensive.

I as told by a humane society to get XL dog advantage to use on my 6 cats.  I have been doing it for a year now.  I was wondering if you can use the frontline or revolution the same way.  This has saved me so much money but I worry about the other things advantage doesn't treat.  I will be de worming then soon.  Is there anyone else with any information on all of these flea meds for dogs that you can use on cat?

You can use Frontline Plus for dogs in the same way, but the dosing is different than with Advantage. Here is a link to a dosing chart:
http://www.lisaviolet.com/cathouse/advantage.html

Frontline Plus protects against ticks and Advantage does not. Advantix, which is Advantage with tick protection, should NEVER be used on cats- the extra ingredients will kill a cat.
The first post on this thread gives dosing instructions for Revolution, but I have never used Revolution before, so cannot comment on it. I have used both Frontline Plus and Advantage this way, safely and effectively, and have saved a ton of money by measuring it myself.

Nice.  I was thinking if the Frontline was the same price I would switch cause I have read it works a bit better.  I can't believe the savings.  I would be spending at least $60 a month if I was never told this.  All these years, wasted money.  Thank you I will now look into switching.

I don't know where you live, but many folks have noticed Frontline and Advantage seem to have lost their flea killing effectiveness in certain areas. :( It is thought that the fleas in certain regions may have developed immunity to the chemicals.
That is the case with us, in Virginia. After using Frontline successfully for years, it only works for about two weeks now. Last year, we switched to Advantage and it is working perfectly (so far). My cats are indoor only, but I live in the middle of the woods and worry about the dogs possibly bringing ticks into the house. I haven't decided what to do about it yet, other than putting Advantix on the dogs and seeing if that works to keep ticks away from my cats.

Here is a TCS link where people talk about what works in their area and what does not.

I am in Vancouver Canada and have not noticed but I have heard of it happening.   I will be watching my cats to see if I see any in 2 weeks.  I have never thought to use anything but advantage cause that is what my mom used.  4 of my 6 are indoor.  my one cat who will be 18 May 1st has never had fleas, weird I know.  I try not to put stuff on her if I don't have to case she has issues with her neck.  I wish fleas would just go extinct.

Well I am now down to 5 cats.  RIP Sambuca.  I need to get more fleas stuff.  I have been thinking about revolution cause 3 of my cats got tapeworm 3 times in 6 months.

That was a huge hit in the pocket book.  I am just a little worried about doing the right dosage as I am so used to advantage.

The vets always say they have no idea how to do it or that you even should.  I am sure that's what they do though.

I have a question, because I'm trying to buy economically also for a cat colony. On the Revolution website, it gave a chart that broke down many things for cat doses and dog doses. However, under 'potency', it said that the cat doses and small dog doses were 60 mg/ml. All the other dog dose potency readings were given as 120 mg/ml. This seems to me to do something to the equation. Have you taken this into account? I'm happy to buy the xl dog size if this doesn't mess up the safety for cats.

Yes, you have to use half as much when you use the large dog formulations. Sarah Ann's post has the right dosing.

You can use the dog size Revolution the same way as the dog Advantage, and it works for worms ear mites heartworms and fleas. I'm measuring mine out right now~ cats under 5 lbs get .13 cc and cats over 5 lbs get .38 cc.
