I have a little mutt named Emma, who is about fifteen pounds. I adopted her back in April, and she's almost five years old, so training her out of certain behavioral issues has been a challenge. It's nothing too bad, but it does contribute to the following. Emma will eat anything if left unattended for even five minutes. I have made the mistake of getting up and going to the bathroom, and coming back to find my food completely gone. I've gotten more careful about it, but yesterday, I went out for about twenty minutes, and when I got back, there was an empty cookie bag on the floor. It hadn't been totally full, but there were a fair number left in there. They were, naturally, chocolate chip. But they were also the kind of store-bought cookies that are so heavily processed that they hardly contain any actual chocolate. =P
Anyway, she can't reach the shelf they were on, so I'm guessing one of the cats knocked it off, and then she went for it. It's possible some cats ate some, but I doubt it was a lot, because Emma is food aggressive and probably made a scene about it. So, suffice to say, whatever was eaten probably went to HER belly. That happened nineteen hours ago. My friend, who knows much more about dogs than I, told me that if they're not showing symptoms of poisoning after six hours, I'm probably in the clear. So all went well, and she seemed fine.
About thirteen and a half hours after the event, I fed her (in the insanity of the previous night, I forgot her dinner!). It was a leftover can of something she used to eat, but hasn't eaten in awhile. I'd say it's mid-quality food. Not terrible stuff, but top-of-the-line. It's wet, just like her current food. Fast forward to nineteen hours after the cookie eating, about five and a half after breakfast, and she vomits all over the floor. It was a LOT. Looked like some undigested chunks, as they still were in the shape of the gravy chunks in her food - little squares.
So I'm trying to determine the cause of her vomiting. Is it a late sign of poisoning from the chocolate? Is it because she probably ate too fast on an empty (except for the cookies!) stomach? Is it because it was a food she hasn't had in awhile and wasn't used to (I know cats do that)? Help! I'm really worried about my baby, and I thought I was well past the window for chocolate poisoning symptoms, so I want to make sure. I have a doctor's appointment in about an hour, but I don't wanna leave her home alone if I need to watch for more serious symptoms. I don't know as much about dogs as cats, so I need your advice. Thank you!
