So this little girl has had some health issues. Long story short, the vet wasn't sure that she didn't have FIP for a while, but we treated her for a very serious bacterial infection (she'd been very lethargic for weeks, losing weight despite eating, her tummy got huge due to enlarged intestines and colon, but pooping relatively normally) and she started eating tons and tons of wet food (we were told to give her up to 2 cans a day), pooping a ton (always in the litterbox save ONE time-- huuuge accident all over some shoes), started playing, the works. Basically, her tummy was getting back to normal so her poop smelled like no other poop I've ever smelled and hope to god no one else ever has to smell this smell. Anyway, she's been off meds for over a week now and has been fantastic until this morning, I found a big ol' plop on our rug! I cleaned it, changed her litterbox, thinking that was the problem (haven't changed litter, litterbox, or litterbox location, all of which have been working totally fine), but we came home tonight to another ploppy poop in the same place. Ugh. I've cleaned and am soaking it in vinegar and water and will scrub with baking soda tomorrow morning so it doesn't smell inviting anymore. I've placed a second litterbox right next to the poop spot on the rug (this was suggested by several individuals on other cat-advice-forums), but I'm wondering, does anyone think they know what the heck is going on here??

Should I call the vet?

Oh ya- I'm suspecting that, all of a sudden, she's bored. We have cat toys, scratching posts, a tower and me, home most of the day playing with her, but could this be the reason?

Help me! My husband is so pissed and our rug now smells like a dirty sheep for some reason.

No, cats are too fastidious to poop out of spite.  She has to smell it too and I'd bet she'd prefer not to.  There's something else going on.  Is the poop runny or hard or normal?

I think you might call the vet and check with him/her, simply because this may be because she needs a little more medicine.

Also, you might want to get a good enzyme cleaner (like Nature's Miracle) and soak, soak, soak the carpet.  That will help get rid of the smell so she can't smell it.  The litter box on top is a good idea, so keep that until she figures things out.

Thanks for your patience.  Stinky cat poop is the worst!

Thank you Ondine for your support and sympathy :) I think I will call the vet tomorrow. Her poop is a bit on the wet side, but she has yet to be a really solid, normal pooper. However, like I said, and I might sound nuts, but this poop smells different. Like, ungodly.

Ugh, the other annoying part of this is that I'm in Denmark and they just don't have these wonderful products! I'm heading to the store tomorrow to buy baking soda (which I finally tracked down under a weird name- I thought, "how could this country not sell baking soda?!") and will rub it into the spot, like I've been advised. Do you think that will be enough? I simply can't find any product here that actually says, "enzyme cleaner" so I'm improvising.

Also, we've been feeding her, per vet's instructions, Prescription Diet a/d (critical care) along with her dry kitten food. That was what she was eating tons of. Now she's eating normal amounts, but I've noticed that, right after she eats the wet food, the a/d, she has so much gas! Like waaay more than ever before. And now this poop. This food-gas-poop deal has only been going on over the last few days. Maybe something's wrong with her tummy again? I still have the Probiotic they gave me. Maybe I should restart that. Ya. I'll just call the vet in the morning. It's after midnight here now. Still researching kitty-tummy-pooping-on-rug-problems.

Thanks again, I really appreciate your thoughts. :)

a/d is a very rich food. Good for critical patients and those that cannot/do not eat much. If anything, I could see mixing *some* a/d in with regular kitten canned food.

Would be curious to see if cutting back on the a/d would help.

I don't think the baking soda is going to work as well as an enzyme cleaner. What the enzyme cleaner does is breaks down the enzymes (smell) that makes the spot smell like a bathroom to the animal. Baking soda will get rid of the smell that you are smelling but not the smell that the cat can smell. I have read that vinegar will help break down the enzymes but I've never tried it and don't know how true it is.

I would definitely restart her on a probiotic. The antibiotics probably killed off all her good gut flora and could be the cause of her loose stools. Even though the antibiotic is done, it takes some time for it to completely leave her system and for her flora to get back to normal. Most of us here on this site use human grade probiotics, but I don't know what dose would be proper for a kitten. Maybe some one else does.

As stated, the Hills A/D is extremely rich, and needs to be for cats who are in recovery or need to get as much nutrients as possible when they are eating so little. Ask your vet, but I think you could probably cut back on the A/D and mixing it with another wet food. Sooner or later she will come off the A/D anyway when she is well.

I would also eliminate all dry food, as many dry foods can cause stomach issues and definitely more stinky poo's,

Wow, thank you so much!

I'll restart the probiotic. I'm still waiting on a call back from the vet. We were worried this morning when we woke up and it appeared she hadn't pooped in about 15 hours- really weird for her. However, I actually found that she had used the litterbox that I'd put on the poop spot on the rug, for pee.  I'd been worried today about the no-pooping when, low and behold, she walked over to the litterbox and pooped a big runny poop right NEXT to it.

At this point, I'm afraid to give her any of the wet food since it seems to upset her stomach so. On the other hand, you say to eliminate all dry food? What do I feed this little girl! Hopefully the vet calls back soon. I shall update later. (And I hope hope hope the vinegar works- ugh.)

Thanks guys, really.

So glad she is using her box!

Well... I wouldn't eliminate wet food, but perhaps try a different one. I know your in Denmark, so I don't know what types of canned cat foods are available to you, but I'd try something grain free with no potato or peas in it. Preferably an all life stage. She still needs good protein and moderate fat since she's still growing and active. I read that http://www.zooplus.co.uk/ delivers to Denmark.

Have you tried changing litters and/or a different litter box? Maybe she associates the litter, or box, with discomfort when pooing so she's decided to try and go somewhere else..

Hey all, just wanted to thank you for the advice. Our vet had us put our little girl back on her antibiotics and probiotic for another 5 days and we removed the rug for a time :) She's been off of meds for about a week and a half now and totally great. Katluver4life, you're right about zooplus, so thanks!

She's doing really well now and we've been keeping her on the probiotic just in case. We'll stop that in another week. Thanks again guys :)
