Matt was in last month when his lungs filled with fluid

this month(a week after the antibiotic pills ran out) they filled again and he got an eye infection.

He's had 2 rounds of antibiotics, eye drops, allergy shots, and is on l-Lysene.

Blood screen showed a healthy cat fighting an infection in his bloodstream. His white cell count was through the roof

I was downstairs cleaning his old litterbox up(I'd left it there in case he did get down while I wasn't looking after the vet said maybe he'd gotten sick from something in the basement)and found mould..white fluffy stuff on a damp sock on the floor. Then black spots on an old xmas stocking also on the floor in a different part of the basement.

Matt used to spend his nights down there, before he got sick-What can I do to help get this stuff out of his system? The antibiotics are only going to target the secondary infections, that he's getting from

For starters, you need to treat the mold and the black mold, maybe even professionally.  The mold is dangerous for you as well and can cause all kinds of health problems.  I think the mold exposure probably is exacerbating his symptoms so keep him out of the basement, maybe indefinitely if you can.  Mold will spread through the air, so it's important to get that cleaned up as soon as possible.

To help him, work on boosting his health and getting his immune system as healthy as possible.  Changing him gradually to a grain-free diet will help, if he's not already on one.  Make sure you're giving him Lysine twice a day as it only works if it stays in their system.  Since it's an amino acid, it flushes out of the system when kitties urinate.  Be sure he's on 500mg twice a day until this is over, then you can reduce it to 500mg a day (250mg twice a day).  I use the powder from either NOW brand or Vita Cost, whichever is cheaper at the time I order it.  A 1/4 t = 500mg.  Add a bit of water to wet food, the powder dissolves and serve.

To help with allergies, you can give a daily antihistamine.  I rotate between Claritin (loratadine) and Zyrtec (cetirizine).  You can give up to 1/2 pill daily.  They are both a 10 mg pill, so start with 1/4 of a tablet.  If that doesn't seem to help, move to 1/2 tablet the next day.  These I crush into wet food and serve with their morning wet food.

Eliminating as much stress as possible will also help.  Establish a routine and keep to it as much as possible.  You might also want to invest in a calming agent such as Feliway and run the diffuser 24/7.  You could also try Stress Stopper from Spirit Essences or their Peacemaker is good, too.

Lastly, you might want to ask your vet to do a culture and sensitivity test of any discharge (if he's sneezing or has goopy eyes) to determine what exactly you're dealing with.  The sensitivity test will tell the vet which med will most effectively treat whatever's going on.  We did this with Hannah and it took 2 rounds of antibiotics, 30 days each, to cure her infection.  That was about 6 years ago and she's not had a relapse since.

Thanks a lot. I got him a probiotic from the vet this morning, and I'll make the grain-free switch over the next week or two. He's already on l-lysene but the kitten rejects the paste...maybe I'll try mixing it in his pate and see if he'll eat that? We don't have mould upstairs in our living space, and now that I know it's in the basement I can get it taken care of-starting with a mass clearout of clutter and running two dehumidifyers to dry the air down there.

Vet says he looks much better but needs his teeth cleaned...but I've spent so much on him already I'm pretty much bankrupt. It'll take a few pay cheques to get the money together, since the only response he had to me asking fo payment plans was to point out that he's cheaper than everyone else..........

You can try mixing the paste in, but if that doesn't work, get the powdered form.  This is the one we use.  We have ordered from Amazon and directly from VitaCost.  .  Make the switch to grain free gradually to avoid any upset in the system.  The canned food can probably be switched quicker, but the dry food needs to be done very gradually.

I'll try that then. The dry food I buy them comes in grain free as well, so I don't even have to switch brands :)  All I need to do now is figure out which cans are grain-free. He won't eat EVO any more, but I seem to recall that weruva might have been grain-free? I'll check when I go in for more food on Friday. Some of the fancy feasts are grain free too aren't they? Are any friskies? He rebels if I don't keep at least 5 flavors rotating through-stops eating the most fed one....that's what happened with EVO. I've got a really helpful pet food store that can help me pick out healthy food for him :)
