I am fostering a 12 week old kitten with upper respiratory. I was prescribed antibiotics to treat him with. Clavamox for twice a day for ten days. Today I missed a dose due to unforeseen circumstances, something I have never done before.

The first dose I have been giving at 6:30 am. I go to work at 7:00 am.

The second dose is given at 6:30 pm right after I get off of work. I had a family emergency come up todaoy and missed the dose, but gave the missed dose at 8:30 p.m.

What would be the best option for giving the next dose? Should I just give the next dose at 6:30 am as normal? Please note that I have to go to work at 7:00 am so giving the dose at 8:30 (12 hour rule) again is not possible. I go to work at 7 am and get home at 6 pm most days of the week.

Thank you so much!

I would give it at 6:30 am. Things happen and we do the best we can. ;)

Yes, just get right back on schedule, not a problem.

How clavamox works is, it takes 12 hours for the med to be gone from his system, so in essence he had 2 hours of no help in curing him. But in 2 hours not much can take place.

You should know that upper respiratory infections are viruses, and antibiotics have no effect on it what-so-ever.

BUT, young kitties don't have a mature enough immune response to get rid of the virus on their own as easily, and very often cause what's known as a secondary infection, that IS bacterial, which does respond to antibiotics.

So the clavamox is used to keep the virus from turning bacterial which allows the kitty to get over the virus normally.

You are doing a great job :)

Hey! No need to worry!

I had the same thing happen, and my mother, who is a physician, told me it's no biggie. :) As long as you keep administering it everyday and for a little while after symptoms are gone, just like with humans.
