Hello, everyone! I love finding new ways to talk about my cats, your cats, everyone else's cats, and cats in general. I don't have enough cats to be a Crazee Cat Ladee, but anything's possible.

I have two tuxedo cats, siblings who were dumped in the alley behind the house about 7 1/2 years ago. The male is Checkers, the female is named Cookie.

A little tuxedo kitten, about 5 or 6 months old, just showed up in the backyard one day. My fiance had been leaving dry food out for our neighbor's roaming cat, and this kitten found it. A few weeks afterward, we saw another tuxedo kitten in the yard: We thought we were seeing things, until we noticed that the second cat had different markings on her face and paws. She was emaciated, her eyes were barely open, and she was listless. They both moved in under our shed, and we began to leave food out for the both of them in the backyard (our neighbor's cat still got his treats on the front porch, where he liked to nap in the afternoons). Within a few weeks, her ribs disappeared, her eyes opened, and she was romping around the yard with her brother.

If Checkers had not brought Cookie to our yard and shown her the food, she would have died within a few days. He's a good brother.

They weren't friendly, but over the weeks didn't scamper as far or as often when we got near them, although they never let us near enough to pet them. The male gradually even got so bold as to sit on the back steps and meow when we were late with his breakfast!

We already had an elderly cat, who we knew wouldn't welcome a pair of little playthings, so we kept them outside until we could find a home for them. Our old cat was ill, but we didn't know it at the time. We called rescue agency after rescue agency, trying to find a home for the kittens, and none would even return our phone calls and e-mails. I know they're swamped, but an e-mail would have been nice.

Our next-door neighbor was threatening to kill the cats because the cats made his dog bark; my retort was the mailman makes your dog bark, are you going to quit having your mail delivered? It was November by this time -- the cats first showed up in July -- and we were worried about them surviving in the cold and with the threat of feral cats in the area, and other predators. We enticed the male into the house with food, but the female was more stubborn. We had to buy a trap to get her into the house.  The plan was to feed them, neuter them, and turn them over to a feral cat farm (which didn't return our phone calls either, at the time).

And then our old cat died, so we decided to keep the kittens. We didn't know where they came from, but figured they were the last of a litter that didn't get adopted, so someone dumped them in the alley behind our house.

It took quite a few months to socialize them, and even now they're very skittish and take a long time to warm up to strangers. Now they're cuddly little lap cats who purr at the drop of a hat, and loving companions who follow me around the house. They kept my husband company when he was going through cancer treatment, and since he died two years ago, they give me a reason to come home at night.

That's our story!  Looking forward to hearing about everyone else's cats.
