What is causing my two five week old kittens to get sick?

I have five kittens that are five weeks old and they all have been in great health up until today (Saturday, October 12, 2013), all of a sudden two of them started vomiting. First it was Peanut, he started meowing like he was in discomfort and threw up the kitten formula my mom has been giving him and his siblings since their mom doesn't feed them but once a day for about 10-15 minutes for some odd reason.

Then while I was cleaning it up I heard a choking noise behind me and Peanut's brother José  threw up, but his was brown, which is not the color of the kitten formula.

All five of the five week old kittens will share the formula my mom makes for them, but shortly after they will go over to their mother and nurse from her if she is lying down even though they just ate which my mom thinks they only do to comfort themselves..

My mom called the vet and asked if it was ok to give worm medicine to both the five week old kittens and  the six week old kittens and the lady on the phone told my mom that it was fine and told my mom how much to give them so my mom gave them all worm medicine because their bellies seemed a bit too bloated.

Right before Peanut threw up he was meowing like he was in pain and starting to poop on the floor, it was kind of semi-runny like slight diarrhea so I grabbed him and rushed him into the bathroom where the litter box is and set him in it to finish his 'business', but he also ate some of the kitty litter before I could get it from his mouth because I was trying to clean up the poop and had to leave him alone.

Earlier José squatted like he was going to go potty so I rushed him into the bathroom and he also ate some of the kitty litter before I could get it all the way out of his mouth.

Could they have gotten sick from eating the kitty litter, or are they eating too much and it's just now catching up to them, or did my mom give them too much worm medicine or could it possibly be a combination of all of that?

Will they get better without a vet visit or do they need to see a vet, we don't have the money right now to have them checked out, so what should I do?

Oh, and I don't know if this could be a part of it, but their mother is sick, I think she has a cold or something because she has a runny nose, she cough/hacks a lot and she sneezes a lot, but that wouldn't make a kitten throw up and have runny poop will it?

I've asked a mod to move this thread to Pregnant Cats and Kittens where you will receive more advice from people experienced with young kittens. If the mother is sick, it is very likely that the kittens will get sick too. The mother at least probably needs a vet visit. Are you using non-clumping litter? Kittens do often taste litter, and it can cause a serious problem if the litter clumps inside them. It may be worms as you suggest, but there seems to be a lot going on that could be causing the problem. Kittens can go downhill very quickly, so if the two continue to vomit, they need to see a vet.

What  milk formula are you using?  which brand? ( some are less reliable)

Like mentionend, mom in cold will prob give them some cold too.  Deworming may too...  Which dewormer had you used?  There are several which should be OK...  For example containing Pyrantel as the active ingredience...

Them complaining before throwing is normal, so to speak.

Also doing poo at other places than in the litter, when having diarrhea is normal too... So this is no behavior problem, but a problem of being sick and having diarrhea.

Be sure all the kittens but mostly important  the sick ones have enough warmth.  Sick persons are always freezing and need extra clothes, no?

As Vball said, non clumping litter is essential with so small kittens.  They often try and eat some of litter...

Vet visit may be necessary, but try and find a vet who is experienced with kittens. Not all vets are.

Holding thumbs, and hoping we got more ideas to help you and your kittens!

Continue to report and ask!

*vibes!*

We do need some more info, type of formula, type of dewormer and dose, etc.

Mom cat is sick and needs clavamox, no doubt they will get it too.

If the vomiting goes on longer than what the dewormer may possibly have caused, they will very quickly dehydrate, so really watch their intake.

Momma cats are getting tired of nursing by 5 weeks, this is why she is only willing for 15 or so minutes.

Very normal, plus she isn't in top condition either.

At this age they can be given Babycat by Royal Canin. It is excellent, teenie little kitten sized bites they can handle, plus l-lysine added for what's to come....(the uri)
