Hi all. So, my baby Rosko (will be 9 this December) was rushed to the ER this past Monday night. They told me that he had a blockage, and that it didn't look good. The way it was broken down to me, was that I needed to pay about $1500 for testing/flushing/and 2-3 days of overnight stay for him to be helped. My other option was to have his bladder flushed out, and take him home for $500 with pain meds, and something to help keep his urethra open...or have him euthanized. After hours of crying, snotting, and making tons of phone calls....God came through that night and I was able to have him treated and take him home. Apparently he had crystals, and wasn't completely flushed because they noted that he still had grit in his urethra.

I took him to the vet the next day for a follow up. He gave Rosko a shot of antibiotics, checked his stream, and gave him a pill to try and help with his appetite. After all of this, Rosko is in and out of the litter box...dripping blood tinted urine everywhere. He will drink water, but hasn't eaten in days. I'm doing my best to make him comfy...but sometimes I feel like I'm not doing enough. Due to the leaky urine...his hind legs are constantly wet and then he's getting litter stuck to his behind. So I'm constantly wiping up, or scrubbing out,or sweeping up something that's coming off of him. I don't mind doing it...he's my baby! I just wanted to know if anyone else has been through this. I'm rinsing his bottom off every morning to get rid of all the litter that's' stuck on him, and it doesn't help that he's a long hair! Also, the pain meds that he is on put him in a zombie like state. He walks in slow motion, and will just lay in the middle of the floor zonked out. I called the vet yesterday to give him an update, and am still waiting on him to return my call. He had several surgeries yesterday and wasn't able to get back to me in a timely fashion. Do I need to just take a deep breath and relax a bit....is there something else I can do for Rosko?

I am sorry to hear that about Rosko. Don't despair as there are cats who have blocked and recovered with timely vet intervention like Rosko received. The danger right now is that he is at risk of re-blocking due to inflammation and possible sludge/debris still in the bladder/urethra. Just be sure that he is able to urinate. If he is producing nothing when trying, be prepared to rush him back to the vet.

In terms of care, you are doing what you can to keep him clean, but he must eat in order to stave off fatty liver disease. Try to tempt him to eat with stinky wet foods (warmed up slightly to increase the smell). Add tuna water to the food, or anything else he really likes. If he still won't eat on his own, you need to start syringe feeding him since he has already been without food for several days. Here's a video that explains how. http://www.thecatsite.com/t/227858/syringe-feeding-lucky-video-if-your-cat-is-not-eating

For the future, here's some reading about urinary tract issues and how diet is related. http://www.catinfo.org/?link=urinarytracthealth

I was able to give Rosko almost 2 whole ounces of food with a syringe. It made me feel very optimistic to see him actually swallowing the food. Unfortunately, I took him to the vet Friday morning, and was informed that his kidneys had shut down, and he was blocked again. This past week has been truly trying for the both of us, and though I wanted to be selfish and keep going....my baby was miserable, and I had to let him go. I know it was the right choice....it just hurts so bad right now. Don't think I'll be back online for a while. Have a blessed night.
