So sorry to read about this injury to your poor kitty. I don't have an answer but do have a couple of questions - where are you located? Is there a second vet clinic nearby that maybe specializes in cats that you can bring him to?

The sooner he can be seen by a different vet, the better. He must be in great pain.

Eating will be a problem - he may need tube feeding until his jaw heals.

I'm sure someone with more knowledge than I will soon come along with some suggestions. I'm not a vet, there may be other internal injuries if kitty was hit by a car, but of course you want to be sure that there is no alternative, a better, kinder solution than what the first vet suggested.

Good wishes for you and your little cat. Please do tell us how it goes.

I think it is inhumane and cruel to have this cat carry on without pain medication and proper treatment by an experienced vet. This is a horrific injury and I can only assume it is just as painful for the cat.

Cat owner says he went to the doctor today
The doctor told him that it was impossible to repair the jaw or treat
The cat will not be able to eat again and live the rest of his life on only liquids
What do you see in it? ??

I've had two cats with broken jaws and from what I understand, the prognosis is dependant on where the break occurs and what type of break it is. If it is a clean, single break, a plate can be surgically inserted and the jaw heals good as new. If there are multiple breaks and the bone is crushed, surgery becomes much more difficult and success is not certain. That is what happened to my Wheezer. The vet wired her jaw and was not very hopeful for a full recovery. She did make it, though, after months of tube feeding and handling her as if she was made of glass. This happened 5 years ago and we can tell she healed a bit strangely because her bottom jaw sits a bit crooked. She can eat dry food, but I still worry about her all the time. From what the vet told us, it was a very, very tricky surgery and they had not done one like it before. We initially spoke of having to euthanize her because of the reasons you mentioned above, but the vet was determined and willing to give it a shot. It sounds like maybe this vet does not have the same confidence level, or maybe the bone has been crushed in multiple spots and not able to be fixed. Poor kitty :( I will say a prayer and send vibes that a solution can be found that works for everyone involved.

Exactly my point. If it was my cat and this was the prognosis, I'd probably put it down. I'm really sorry.
