Our 6 month old kitten Lilly broke her leg on wednesday night (spiral fracture of her right hind femur). She had surgery on the leg to put a pin in the femur. She has to be on cage rest for at least 4 weeks. Now she is barely been home for 24 hours and the cage we go for her wont be here until 11 and she has escaped from her penned off area 3 times already any way I can stop her? Also she wont sleep on her bed or a cushion which are her usual preference after my big king size bed of course. Instead she is choosing to sleep in her litter box. Thankfully she seems to be getting her appetite back which is one less worry! Any ideas?

Also upon checking her stitches just now I feel slightly Suspicious that she may have popped a stitch when escaping her pen. Any ideas on what I should do she has antibiotics and pain killers and has an appointment with the vet on monday. Do I leave it or do I phone the vet I wouldnt be able to get to the practice until my partner gets home as I dont drive.

Sleeping in her litter box is not good sign, normallly.  That could just be a comfortble spot, or it could mean she's now fighting a UTI, poor thing.

Has her cage arrived yet?  If not, what are you doing to try to close her off?  Are you just shutting her in a bathroom or something?  She needs to be in a room with things where she cannot jump up onto anything, so no furniture (or toilets
).  I'm thinking a hallway with baby gates stacked 2 high or something.

Gosh, you are all going to have a tough road ahead, trying to contain a young cat from bouncing off the walls for an entire month

As to a pulled stitch, I would definitely CALL the Vet to see if it's possible she could have done that and what they advise.

for a quick recovery

She is now sleeping in her kitten bed happily though flinging litter everywhere in her cage. She has no popped stitches and what little movement she has to do (getting from her bed to the litter tray) no longer seems seriously stiff or awkward.

Great news!  Hopefully she didn't do any damage when she popped her stitches

Just a tip with litter and cages...we use Yesterday's News which is a recycled paper type litter. MUCH easier to clean up than clay litter (and it doesn't get in wounds/suture areas.)

Everyone should know there's a LOT of cat litter out there, like Fresh Step, that cause respiratory problems and cancer! The recycled paper litter is the best! I use Cat's Pride.

Just an update on Lilly's condition she had a vet visit on monday and vet said she was doing fine. Today is her first day without one of her pain meds and it is amazing how much more alert she is. Vet obviously said if she isn't coping without it or seems lethargic from the pain they can supply us with more medication for her. Last night we took her buster collar off so she could clean her fur and the poor darling went lad licking at her paws and back. My Husband sat there laughing and said to me 'You can almost hear the poor little thing screaming 'No not the germs ick ick ick got to get them off must be clean, clean is good I like clean'" Need less to say I cracked yp laughing and wet to give the poor thing a scratch behind the ear because daddy was being mean. Oh the filthy looks that she gave him were almost as comical as the voice he had used. But she is recovering and has another vet visit on monday coming to check her sutures.

Would you like to see a picture?

I'm glad she doing so well.  And you've only got about 3 weeks of cage rest left.  Poor darling.  How rude of your husband to make fun of her!  The nerve.

Unfortunately, I can't see the picture very well because it's dark.  She needs a spotlight on her to show off her nice clean coat

Continued vibes for a quick recovery

Well, it's good Lily can have a little more freedom, but bad that something happened to hurt/scare her.  Hopefully nothing actually happened to her leg

I have noticed shes limping a bit more but I think thats just shes been taking advantage of the freedom and really walking and working her claws on her scratch post her bad leg does seem to stick out a bit when sitting and she walks with her paw at a funny degree when flat but vet told us her leg may be a smidge crooked.

let's hope she's not limping because she's hurt herself again

So emergency trip to the vets with lilly this morning as she was in pain turns out little darling has over done it with her privilage of having little bits of exercise. Pin is still stable and leg seems fine according to vet so all is well. More rest less exercise is the vets prognosis now and we have moved her cage to under the window for a change of scene for her. So now she can see the entire room and into the kitchen when we are in their prepping meals and doing the laundry. Vet gave our beautiful girl lots of compliments on how shes looking very pretty and seems to be healing nicely. Also seems to be putting on some much needed weight to

Gosh, and here I thought she was almost done with her cage rest
.  I was thinking this coming Sunday was it.  Guess I was wrong.  So...how much more time does she have in "jail"?

But I'm glad she is still doing ok and the pins are still in place, etc.

that one day soon she will be forever out of that cage
and running around like nothing ever happened.

Poor lady has to have a week of enforced solitary and then she has a check up for her leg on the 4Th of November! She seems to have upped her weight from 2kg as we upped her to two pouches of wiskas a day and feeding kibble when she wants it. So I'm happy with her weight gain as she was a wee bit n the boney side.
