Hello,

I'm wondering approximately how long BLUE Basics Grain Free Formula Cat Food ]11lbs] will last for my 8 month old DSH cat.

It cost around 50.00 so I'm wondering if it is worth it.

I'm looking into something grain free while I research a raw diet.

Thank you.

I think this is a difficult question to answer because there are so many variables. How much does your cat eat daily? Since he's a growing teenager that amount may change. Cats do tend to eat less on higher quality foods, but how much less is very individual. I think you could make a guess based on how much he eats now and know that it will last AT LEAST that long on the BB.

What is he eating now? Depending on that, I wonder if it wouldn't be best to just to transition to raw instead of the intermediate step? Have you seen the stickied threads in our Raw & Home-Cooked Cat Food forum?

:yeah:

How much does your kitten weigh? The feeding instructions will give you a very general idea:

A 5 - 9 lb. cat would get 1/4 to 1/2 cup per day, a 10 - 14 lb. cat 1/2 - 1 cup a day. Kittens generally eat a lot.
1 cup = 8 ounces, 11 lbs. = 176 ounces. If you feed 1/2 cup/4 ounces a day, 11 lbs. would last 44 days.

@jcat, thank you I've been over feeding my little guy is is just under 9lbs and I've been giving him about 1 1/2 cups a day. I don't know why my vet didn't explain this simple feeding instructions. Even though there are instructions posted on the back of the food bags I just thought since his weight was healthy for his age (8months) and my vet didn't comment... it was fine.

One and half cups a day sounds like a lot, but kittens do burn a lot of energy. Is that the Blue Buffalo, or another brand? Those are the instructions from the BB website, but they're for cats, not kittens. If he's actually eating 12 ounces of BB now and his weight is good, you probably wouldn't want to cut him back for another 2 - 4 months, and then only gradually. One bag will last you just over two weeks then.

My cat gets 1/2(1/4 twice a day) cup of grain-free food a day, it may be different for you depending on the cat

I also feed the Blue Basics Grain-Free, and the 5 lb bag lasts me about a month for two cats. I have never bought the 11 lb bag though.

Correction: Actually, my last 5lb Basics bag lasted about 3 weeks, so not quite a whole month.

If the cat is altered you'll have to adjust downward. A little.

Three weeks for two cats is great!!! Most of the other comments suggested it would last a lot less. Also you were referring to the 5lb bag. I don't want to take Carl off his kitten food since he will only be a kitten for four more month
