My 1.5 year old, male, neutered cat "Mr. President" had a ruptured anal gland last week. He was given antibiotics and I did warm compresses.

The wound itself is closing up and no longer infected, but when he poops, a little bit of liquid-poop actually comes out of the wound. My vet did an anal probe and found no rips in the rectum or colon. He is working with a colleague - but still no answers. Surgery is being considered.

My cat is otherwise okay - eating well, pooping and peeing, playing with his friends. But it is a messy situation! And when the hole closes, the vet and I are afraid the liquid will accumulate and rupture again.

Does anyone know ANYthing about this? Advice?

I can give more details if needed.

Thank you for reading.

We've had several posts recently regarding anal glands, but nothing like this.  Unfortunately, I've no experience with this type of problem.  Hopefully someone will be along shortly that can help.

My vet hasn't ever seen this type of thing in a cat. We're both at a dead end, but hoping his colleague can help.

Maybe a consult with a vet school would help?

My vet talked with a specialist in internal medicine today, and they agree that it's best to wait a few days and see if, now that the holes are closed, any more accumulation/impaction happens. He also said that cats have a really amazing ability to heal on their own, moreso than other types of pets.

In the meantime, I'm starting Mr. President on a high fiber diet to encourage bulky poop. He goes in Friday for a check up. I really hope he won't have to have any surgeries and that this just heals on its own!

Update:

Mr. President has had no more problems since his anal gland ordeal. The holes closed up and the hair grew back. The vet and I were both shocked, and he says that it is really a miracle that defies explanation that this healed. I am grateful!
