As of today you should be seeing a green ribbon, one or more, under your profile column.

What are those ribbons?

These ribbons reflect the amount of thumbs-up votes you have received from other community members. Your ribbons, rep score and comments are visible only to you! No one else, other than the moderators and admins, can see them.

Thumbs Up? Huh?

If you're scratching your head now, don't worry. Although this system has been in operation for the past two years, we've never promoted it. For most users, it either went unnoticed or simply was not used as intended, or at all.

Ever noticed the green little "thumbs-up" icon at the bottom of each post?

That little green thingie is the engine that runs a special feedback system on this site.

On some sites this is called reputation, but the word could be considered misleading in this context. We will be changing the terms later on, but for now I'll be using the terms "reputation system" in this post. Just keep in mind that this system does not measure your popularity on the site.

This system offers a way for the community to provide feedback on quality contributions. Consider this a tool in your membership toolbox: one that allows you to point out a quality post which you feel makes a significant contribution to yourself, the community and the site.

I've put together some guidelines for this semi-new system. Hopefully this can help everyone see what this is all about and how to use it properly -

Reputation Overview

  • Reputation allows members to acknowledge quality contributions that are beneficial to the community.
  • You can leave reputation by clicking on the thumbs-up button.
  • You have the option of leaving a comment along with your rating. This is highly encouraged.
When should Rep be given?

Rep should be given for a specific piece of content: a useful post, a great image or a helpful review. Remember: you should be recognizing the contribution, not the contributor

When should it NOT be given?

Reputation should not be given for matters of personal gain. This includes giving rep to friends for no reason, or for anything that does not benefit the community as a whole.

Why should you give Rep?

Please use the rep system with care, but use if often. It is a very useful tool for us as a community, for two reasons -

1. Encouraging quality content by letting members know their contribution was appreciated.

2. Helping the site admins feature and surface the best content we have.

Who Can View My Reputation Score?

Only yourself and the site team can view your reputation score. The reputation system is there to provide you with feedback from other community members about your forum contributions. We keep this discreet and private, to prevent this from becoming a popularity contest.

Reputation Etiquette

- Do not ask for rep, explicitly or otherwise, for a specific contribution or in general.
- Do not hold grudges with rep. Give rep to any contribution that you feels deserves acknowledgement, regardless of your relationship with the contributor.
- Do not give rep to a post of a member just because you like them. The POST itself should be worthy of the rep.

- Never coordinate rep, offer it conditionally or otherwise try to manipulate the system. This will be considered a violation of the site's rules.

Coming soon: A contest to select a new name for the system! Stay Tuned for more!

Please do start using the thumbs-up whenever you see a quality post, review or image posted on the forums. Thank you!
