Our foster cat just gave birth on Monday to what we believe is her first litter.  She is a young cat herself (9-18months?).  She had a somewhat traumatic delivery in that she pushed for two hours with the first without making progress beyond a tail starting to show itself, then go back in, and we ended up taking her to the emergency vet in the middle of the night.  Her labor stopped after the long, stressful car trip (there was a terrible accident on the freeway and all lanes were closed), and on arrival at the vet she had no kittens in the birth canal and x-ray showed 3 kittens properly positioned.  We brought her back home, and her labor restarted and she gave birth to her first about two hours later (slow start for that one--I thought he was stillborn--but doing very well now), her second an hour after that, then took a big break and had her third 6 hours later.  I saw all three placentas, except the third one I came back in the room right after she had delivered and she was already eating it, so I didn't see the whole thing.  The babies are BIG.  All born between 130-139grams.

So, that's the history.  Day 1 she became stressed later that day and was breathing very rapidly and occasionally panting.  I realized the room was very warm and after cooling it a bit and leaving her alone more rather than checking on her a bit, she gradually calmed and was much better by morning of day 2.  Day 2 my concern was that she still wasn't getting up to use the litter box and I still had to bring her her food to eat.  She made a bit of a pain nose a few times when she tried to stand, but once I got her to walk, she was okay.  She had been a bit constipated leading up to the delivery, and I had a sense she was becoming increasingly so.  I started adding pumpkin to her wet food, and that evening after a lot of shenanigans on my part (moving litter box all around, changing type of litter, digging around in box myself, etc), she finally used it.  Hooray.  Babies gained around 30 grams each after one day.  Yes, I know that's a ton, but that's what the scale says, and they do indeed look big and getting bigger every day.

Day 3 (yesterday) she was back to seeming sore when she stood up in her box when I came in.  She still wasn't leaving her nesting box to eat, but relying on me to keep bringing her food and holding it right under her chin to eat while she layed down, nursing her babies.  At one point she stood to get up and made a sad noise that sounded like pain to me and layed back down.  I gave her a break and later lifted her from the box gently and set her down across the bathroom from her babies and she did then start walking around.  A little gingerly at first, then stronger, and she seemed much better once walking around, and she ate from her bowl and seemed relieved to "get out" a bit.  She did this at some point day 2 as well when she got out of her box finally.  She even layed on the floor for a while and visited with me.  Of course when a baby squeaked, she ran and jumped back in bed.  She's been very attentive, if overwhelmed.  Later yesterday she spontaneously used her box and peed and pooped a ton in it.  I felt like she was doing better then.  Kittens again had gained a lot of weight.  All are in the 170-180g range.

Day 4 (today) she seemed pretty good when I came in the room this morning.  But, she still hadn't gotten out on her own to eat anything.  She eats eagerly when I hold the bowl up for her in bed.  I did hear her use the litter box once in the night.  I actually have a baby monitor in the room, so I can hear easily when she uses the box.  She hasn't used the box yet today that I have heard.  I took her out of her box at one point to see how she was doing with standing and walking, and she seemed okay, though started gingerly like yesterday.  I'm tending to relate to all this by my experience with human pregnancy and delivery, and I know how difficult walking in the days (and sometimes weeks) after delivery can be for a first time human mom, especially if she has done a lot of pushing, and I'm wondering if this is what it is for her.  Her behavior seems like that--like her nether regions are just sore and she's being ginger with it.  She does like for me to pet her, including rolling over for me to rub her belly.  I felt a more solid area on her abdomen today, near her tail end, and my guess was that was stool in her colon?  Is that where I would feel it?  It was slightly left of center, below her lowest nipples.  She wasn't at all bothered by me palpating/massaging the area quite firmly, and gave no indication that was causing her any pain.  If anything, she shifted position to allow me better access.

I have been in contact with the rescue I foster for several times about her, but haven't talked to them in the last two days.  I did email them an update yesterday.  I don't want to put her through another car trip if this sounds like a normal but slow recovery, because it is so very stressful for her and the vet I have to go to for the rescue is 30-40 minutes away (which I don't mind, but she HATES).  I also don't want to expose the new kittens to stuff if I don't have to.  On the other hand, if this sounds like something concerning going on, I would want to make sure she was seen.  I would feel much better if she was just getting up to eat and use the litter box at this point.  The only other thing that might be affecting her is that she tends to step on the kittens when she tries to stand up, and they squeal, and she looks frantic, and tries frantically to adjust her position (usually making things worse by lying on one) and she just generally seems a little overwhelmed by the whole thing.  She taking great care of them though, she just strikes me as inexperienced.

I'm sorry this is so very long, I just thought it would be more helpful if I included as much information as I have.  Does anyone have any thoughts on whether this sounds within the realm of normal?  Any suggestions for me?  This is the first time we've had a pregnant foster, and this forum was a lot of help to me in preparing for the birth.

Just heard her use her box, so that's a step in the right direction!  I'll be checking shortly to see which thing she accomplished in it.

Well it seems I posted my original post right before she began to show significant turn around.  She's used her box twice (both functions), appears to have eaten some food when I wasn't in the room, and when I came in to change her box she took the opportunity to get out of her nest and walk around, use her scratching post, eat and even followed me into the next room when I got out a favorite toy.  She did make the most massive mess with her litter--glad her pan is in the bottom of a walk-in shower, as there was as much litter out of the box as in.  Whatever though, I was just so happy that she had used it twice on her own.

So, since I didn't have any replies before things turned around I was going to just delete my thread, but I don't see that option on these forums.  If it's there, let me know.  My initial post is so long that I hate to waste people's time reading that.

Sorry no one else had replied, welcome to the site, glad that Mum has been able to use the tray by herself under her own steam. As you previously said she is probably very sore after giving birth and if everyone and everything were exactly the same the world would be a very boring place, so these hiccups are sent to try us. Please keep posting and letting us know how mum and the babies are doing. Would love to see some piccys.

I'm glad she used the litter tray for you. When ours had her kittens she didn't go right away and when she did finally use the box she was constipated. If you notice a bit of blood on her back end for a few days that's normal as long as it's not more than a few drops. Considering that she had big kittens I wouldn't be surprised to see some.

Sometimes it takes a while for a response on here and sometimes only a few minutes, I'm sorry nobody got to your question sooner. How are the babies doing and is mama kitty still improving? If you have anymore questions please ask, there are some amazing people on here. I had so many questions when we realized the cat we took in was pregnant and then when she had the kittens and for other things with my other cats.

Best of luck to you and your kitties, let us know how it's going!

Im glad to see the recovery is going on nicely - surely in much tx to your help and support.  I can read between the lines you are quite knowleable, and have good instincts.

Anyway, I was going to agree with your analysis: it was a combination of  1.  a rather long delivery with these very big babies straining her joints into maximum.  2.  Her eagerness to stay with her kittens, being somewhat overhelmed, not even allowing herself to go out and strech on her legs.  3.  Laying still so long, she got stiff...   And it of course hurts to begin move...

I understand she wasnt bleeding or something, you would write about it if she was.

Do keep on massaging her if she enjoys it.  And be sure she gets good food aplenty, as she has big kittens who gain 30+ every day.   Good wet food and or first rate kitten dry food.  You can add raw egg yolk into her wet food, its very nourishing  (if salomonella on eggs is a problem at your place, you can try and wash of the eggs with boiling water with some soap in it).

Nay, we wont delete your thread.  Other people  DO learn from older threads too.   Quite a few find us by googling, for example.

Keep reporting and asking!

Good luck!

Well, today wasn't what I had hoped.  She has been just like the other days--staying in her box, not eating unless I hold her bowl in the box for her or lift her out of her box and put her in front of her food.  She has taken two walks out of the room--she got out herself for one, and I lifted her out for the other.  The not eating on her own is bothering me the most.  She needs to be eating a lot!  Her primary diet is wet food, and then there is always a bowl of quality kitten dry food in there as a backup (currently Wellness Kitten).  She's been eating about a can and a half of wet food a day--the 5.5oz cans, not the little 3 oz ones.  That still doesn't seem like enough to me--is it?  She was 12.5 lbs right before giving birth, but obviously lost a lot of that in kitten, placenta and fluid weight.  She looks bright eyed and not sick, if you know what I mean, though her sides look thin.  Thoughts?

Are you weighing the kittens each day at about the same time?  They should be gaining 10g or more per day most days.  Personally I would take her for a vet check to be sure she doesn't have an infection.  Weigh her as well to see if she is gaining or losing.

They're gaining like crazy--20-30g a day.  They're all in the neighborhood of 220g now and are not yet a full 5 days old.  I haven't weighed mom cat yet, but was thinking of that today.  I'm not sure my scale will work for her, but I will try it.  I guess I could weigh myself holding her to get an idea, but it won't be very sensitive to small fluctuations.  She's too big to fit on the scale I use for the kittens.

If she isnt too heavy for the scale as such, a tip with momas and big kittens is to weight them in a mixer bowl, or similiar...  :)

I think she's eating enough if she looks healthy and is acting fine. Our girl was eating between 1 1/2 and 2 1/2 cans of the 5.5oz each day, it just depended on how much dry she was eating when we weren't watching. You could try giving her some kmr each day for extra nutrients, our mama kitty loved it.

Those kittens are gaining way better than ours did lol, we had a few days with a 20-30g gain but not often. I'm glad everyone seems to be doing fine! :)

She's continuing to improve each day.  It seems to be one of her back legs that's been bothering her.  I got her some special treats and food, and that's motivating her to move around more, though she's still mostly in the box with her babies.  I would think that's pretty normal at this point, though.  She's not limping and she jumped up and down from some surfaces yesterday without showing any trouble, so I'm encouraged that whatever she hurt it is getting better.  Must have been something that happened during delivery.  She did panic while pushing the first baby out and jumped in and out of deeper box while the kitten was half-delivered, so that's a possibility.
