So I had good intentions with a stray/feral kitten but I ended up doing something stupid.

I had seen a kitten around my apartment complex and attempted to catch it by hand. Obviously not a smart idea! It ended up biting me when I grabbed it. I went to the doctor about the bite and by law they had to call animal control. The bite is fine and the animal control officer said the kitten seemed fine and I will likely not need rabies shots. The kitten was captured and is being quarantined for 10 days. The officer told me that a cat with no owner who bites someone has to be euthanized after the 10 day quarantine period. However, she told me the cat could be saved from euthanasia if someone took ownership of it. Feeling terrible because it was my fault the cat would have been euthanized, I took on ownership of the cat. Once the quarantine period is up, I'll be picking it up from where it is being held and will take the cat to get spayed/neutered and vaccinations.

Here is my problem: I will be moving in a month back to my parents' and I won't have the ability to keep the kitten. I'm worried a shelter won't take it because it was a stray/feral. Could anyone advise on this? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

I suppose you had some plan when you tried to catch this cat at the first place?  Adopting yourself, even if you move back home?

This should anyway still be your alternative nr 1.  You may thus contnue to foster it.  Talk with your parents, beg them if so be.  Or even, make the cat your present to them parents!

The next best option, is if YOU find someone who is willing to foster and or adopt. Use your connections!  You do surely have some!

Dont forget, never ever give away "for free to a good home" to somebody you dont know well.  They usually end as sparring partners to fighting dogs after their claws are drawn out, vivisections, or as soup in China.

Shelters?  They may, but they want fostered cats.  Few shelters admits semiferales.

If you manage to foster it so it is handleable, and he is young, you will have a decent chance a shelter may admit him.

But by the same reason, you should be able to find a real person "end consumer" who wants to adopt it...

Hope my words had helped you some in your thoughts.

Good luck!

Oh boy, what a pickle.  But Stefan is correct, she's your cat now, which means responsibility.  So start making connections now.

How old is the kitten?  She will be easier to socialize if she's less than 12 weeks but not impossible otherwise.  Make sure you have a room for her to be alone in (your bathroom is fine).  She will probably hide for the first few days anyway, but take precautions against her escaping into the rest of the house (stack two baby gates on the door.  You can get them at Walmart for $10 each)

Leave her alone for the first day but make sure she has a litter box and food and water.  Place the food and water at least three feet from her litter, if possible.  Nobody likes to eat next to their toilet!

Keep her routine to a minimum.  Feed her, scoop the litter and just sit and talk or read out loud to her every day at the same time.  Use a good quality wet food and to really bribe her, Gerber chicken baby food works wonders (get Stage 2 without onions).

Thanks for helping her.  We've all made this mistake - our hearts take over.  I ended up with four kittens in one dog crate once because I acted exactly like you did - scooped them up without a plan.  Luckily, I wasn't bitten and didn't have to move, so you've got challenges I didn't.  But don't feel badly.

Now is the time for your head to kick in - think about it logically, spread the word and you'll come up with an acceptable plan for you both
