I just adopted a 5 year old kitty. It is day 4 now and she is still not eating. She acts excited when I bring out the food, ( fancy feast and Hills Science Diet) but then sniffs it and won't eat. She is eating cat grass.  The ann arbor humane society had just treated her with Drontal for a tape worm. I saw the dead worm pass the first night she was home. No pooping since then. Could the drontal be making her tummy feel sick? Is why she is eating the grass? Does anyone know? She seems to have plenty of energy and she is peeing, though not much.

What was she eating while at the shelter?  Call them and then get some of that food for her.  In the meantime, you could try plain meat baby food, Chicken or Turkey, and see if that works.  Also, you can warm up wet food a bit to see if that will entice her to eat.  I'd use Fancy Feast for that.  You've got to get some real food into her or her liver could be compromised.  Can you look into her mouth to see if she has any ulcers or anything like that?

Im wondering if there is a stop in the intestines, as she eats this grass.  They do it to vomit.

Cats sometimes do have a instincts for what to do. For example this grotesque example of the cat who got only liver to eat, with massive excess of A-vitamine. Causing  bone structures to grow in its back-spine.[edit: causing cartilege in its back spine turning into bone structures]

The cat managed to help itself by refusing to eat the liver, ie didnt eat nothing at all, till the symptoms disappeared [ie boned cartilege turned back into normal cartilege]...

And so on, in several circles...

Try out with this baby food, Gerber? stage one as mentioned.  If you can get it immediately in the nearest hour.

If she still doesnt eat, away asap to the vet.  as there is prob an obstruction.

If she is somewhat fat, there is also danger for liver damages by this long non eating - and she must have especial food, probably, vet will help with it too.

If she isnt fat, the danger for the liver is much lesser.

Perhaps even begin to phone the vet.

Good luck!

She is getting what she got at the shelter. I made sure to ask. I do think now she might be eating the dry food now. It looks like it has gone down more in one day than if my other cat alone was eating it.  I did put in a call to the shelter about her and had to leave a message. They have not returned the call. Tried to talk to my vet but she just said it was the responsibility of the shelter for 30 days  and to talk to them so not getting much help. I think  will try the baby food. Thanks!!!

I'm glad it looks like she's eating something.  Sounds like you're pretty much not getting any help from your vet.  I'd be looking for a new one if I'd been treated in that manner.  Most kitties respond well to the baby food or the warmed up wet food.

The cat may still be really tense so try different things including treats just to get the digestive system going and entice the cat to start eating. Unless there is a problem the cat won't starve itself so try different foods, tuna, maybe cooked meat, or something to get the cat started. Hopefully the cat is drinking water otherwise dehydration could become an issue as well. Make sure to get it to eat otherwise you really should bring the cat to a vet or the shelter where you got it and check it over. Short term no food isn't really a problem but long term is something to worry about. Usually they eat grass when they have an upset stomach but I don't think they eat it instead of food.
