Strange bump on kitty's nose

Hi all,

my kitty is 4 months old and he's been with us for 2 weeks now. Last week I noticed a quite large (comparing to his tiny nose) hairy "bump" on the bridge of his nose. It has appeared suddenly and looks like a raised patch of his own fur with something underneath it. Not sure how to describe it better, so I'm attaching a photo with as close shot as I could get of the "bump" while the little one was sleeping. It doesn't seem to bother him at all - no pain, no scratching. However, at the same time, he started scratching under his thin and close to his one ear. Other than that, no sign of illness - very active, eating good.

I took him to a vet straight away and after some tests (ultraviolet showed no fungi; also, he's flea and lice free). The vet said that the patch on the nose could be a) a small injury of some sort; which I think is not very likely, because I guess it would be sensitive to touching or something;

b) an allergy of some sort. He was vaccinated a week before I took him home, so the vet says there might be a slight possibility he had a delayed reaction. OR the food allergy - I changed his food just a few days before the "patch" appeared. Might be a coincidence, though.

The vet also related the chin/ear scratching with an allergy too (other possibility is acne, she said) and prescribed chlorhexidine for these itchy areas.

However, I'm not concerned about the itching all, but very scared about that patch/bump on his nose. I changed his food back in case the kitty is allergic to it, but two days and no improvement. The vet advised me to watch the kitty closely and if the patch won't be gone in two weeks, she'll do further tests.

Any thoughts on what might be going on here? Thank you!

Can you tell what color it is under the fur? Can you wiggle it around at all? It could be a cyst (which you can usually wiggle a little) but the picture makes it look like there is a point aiming toward his nose. Is it oddly shaped or is that just the camera angle? (Sorry I'm all questions and no answers tonight.)

Side:

Oh, and that black tiny dot on the right side of his nose appeared at the same time the patch did, but I've read that it could be just pigmentation ("cat freckles").

I was fairly calm after our visit to the vet, but I've turned the internet upside down last night and I'm frightened that I can't really find anything that could be related to my kitty's current situation. I found that cancer is one of the possibilities (also, regarding he's a white kitty), but isn't he too young for that? Also, I don't think he has been exposed to the sun that much during his life in a cattery.

Your opinions and advices are very welcome.

I haven't seen anything like this before and can't offer any suggestions. However, 2 days to see an improvement if it has been an allergic skin reaction to something is not very long at all.

The fur where he was scratching will be thicker.  I assume you and your vet have done this, but have you been able to examine really thoroughly to see if there is any sign of crusting, raised skin, or discolouration there?

I would keep a close eye on his nose for any changes: hopefully it will start to go away, but if it seems to get larger, or starts to bleed, or changes in other way I would go straight back to your vet for further advice.

I'd like to add what a lovely little kitten he is - such a cute face, and how good he is when having his picture taken!
I hope you get answers soon, that it is nothing serious and resolves quickly.

Oh my, he is just divine!! ls he a Silver Shaded Brit?  l have a Foldie who has a Roman profile, that looks a bit like a bump from the side (it's hard to see from above because he's black). Your little guy has the same profile, it doesn't look overly raised, but it has distinct edges. My suggestion would be if it doesn't go away in your vet's timeframe, that s/he recommend a feline vet, or specialist.

l would love to see more pictures of this little guy

He's gorgeous.  I would keep an eye on it.  This may help a little with your worries.  Our cat Gracie had basel cell carcinoma on her cheek.  It started out looking like an abscess or cyst but the vet diagnosed it pretty quickly.  She removed it and that was that.  Apparently basel cell carcinoma is bad in humans but no so bad in cats.

So even if it is cancer, that isn't necessarily terribly bad news.  What your kitty has doesn't look like what Gracie had, BTW.

Good luck and keep us posted...

My cat had a bump somewhat like this on his nose and eventually it got kind of crusty and then it just went away (took about a month).  I think in my cat's case, it was a spider bite or some other sort of bite.  He is my champion spider slayer so it kind of made since to me that one may have bitten him.

Hello, so sorry your kitty is going thru this i know what's it's like to see a helpless animal have something and your baffled, does it feel like crust or a cut of some sort, try a warm wash cloth on it sterile of course then put a dab very small on it of bactrim or neosporin , see if that help it looks like something one of my cat's had one time, it was a scratch but the vet should or would have known that, kitty couldn't have gotten burned on anything we all know how curious they are especially at that age let me know

Cancer is a very scary word indeed.. I am so glad to hear that Gracie is OK!

I was considering insect bites too, because I accidentally found a sleepy bee crawling in my flat a few days ago. But his patch appeared even before I found the insect, so it doesn't make sense. Also, bees die after stinging and I think the patch would be hurting after the sting. Did you do anything to make it flake away? Or has it healed by itself?

It does look like a crust with his fur on top to me. I would need a prescription to get something like Neosporin where I live, but I'm going back to the vet next week (unless there will be any changes that I'm so hoping for) and ask her. Thanks!

Update! It's been almost 2 weeks since I started this thread and the "bump" on kitten's nose reduced dramatically. It's still visible, but it's not a bump anymore, more like a dark patch. Also, there were no scabs or flake aways, it sort of heals itself and gradually disappears/fades. Also, the chin/ears scratching reduced a little bit too. There were no changes in his behavior - he's very active, a good eater and pooper :) We keep him strictly on the food we know he has never had problems with, so hopefully that probably was a food allergy after all and he's getting better. Of course, I don't want to clap hands too soon, I'm monitoring him closely, but fingers crossed he'll be OK soon.

The photo was taken yesterday. Sorry for the sleepy face, that's the only way I can take some close shots of him :)

Thank you for the update, it is good to hear (and see) how much better your kitten's nose is. He has a very cute nose and a very cute face when he's sleepy.
His little nose lump was most strange and it seems no one has had any idea of what it was. Perhaps it was a skin reaction linked with the food allergy you think he has.   I know I looked on line with so many different searches and couldn't find anything that looked like it!  In some ways that is a good thing as many of them sounded pretty scary.  I'll have my fingers crossed it goes completely and no sign of anything similar again.

Hope his itching and scratching clears up completely very soon so he can concentrate on his kitten play.

Me neither. Thank you so so much for looking and for all the support!

I'll keep updating the thread with hopefully good news.

Sorry for such a late reply!

My vet is certain that it was a food allergy that caused it. We switched back his food and in time it got better and better until the bump was gone.

How's your kitty doing?

Thank you for your update, good to hear things are going well and found a likely cause.

Agree, would be nice to know how @kkiittieesss kitten is doing now.

I found his post when I seen these on my kitten. He is only 8 months old and these appeared over just couple days. The day before I took this picture I noticed his one eye slightly closed and red with what I thought was a scratch under it. Today the eye looks better but now he nose has his raised bump on it. It doesn't seem to be bothering him but confused by it. After reading these posts it makes sense allergies, but only thing that he has gotten into was he got out twice yesterday and wanted to chew on plant in yard. Could his be it? Any suggestions would be helpful and original post and how your kitten it.
