Kitty Just Spayed 2 Days Ago And Now I Am Worrying About Her

My 22 month kitty was just spayed 2 days ago and I am worried about several things. First of all, she saw our regular vet (who is an outstanding vet and considered to be one of the best in our state) 2 months ago and got her regular annual checkup and got all of her shots up to date. Most of their prices are very reasonable however their price for spaying is $400.00 (which includes an overnight stay) so I’ve been putting it off until I could afford it.

I was concerned that she was already 22 months old (but strictly an indoor cat) and I was afraid of putting if off any longer for fear of it being harder on her as she got older. I discovered a discount spay program by our local Animal Welfare League (which is a great organization by the way) which would enable me to get her spayed for just the $36.00 cost of pain medication. The vet practice which performs this service is *also* considered to be one of the top practices in our state however the vet which did the surgery was the junior vet there. With this vet, she was sent home the same day. This was too good an opportunity for me to pass up and after I checked with my regular vet to make sure it was OK, I went ahead and did it.

Her surgery was early this past Thursday morning so she is just a little more than two days into her recovery. They gave her a shot of morphine before she came out of the anesthesia and I’ve also received pain medication to put on the inside of her ear three times a day. She had been absolutely out of it after she got home that first day. She has perked up a little now but either just sits around and relaxes now or goes to sleep, which I guess is normal for this short a time into her recovery.

I’m still concerned however because while she eats occasionally (I’ve been giving her baked boneless chicken breast as a treat to help make her feel better), she looks much thinner than normal. She is only 6.5 lbs normally (my regular vet is not too concerned about that and says she will likely just be a small cat her entire life). She looks absolutely gaunt now after the surgery and that concerns me.

Also, how can I tell if/when she is in pain? Her incision looks good (it is under her belly) and she walks around normally, and even jumps up on a chair occasionally (which I am trying to prevent her from doing till she heals more). I’ve been concerned because I waited so long (till she was 22 months old) and also because I didn’t get the optional blood work done ahead of time (they checked her heart though and gave her a visual exam). They said that she did beautifully during the actual surgery however so I guess I’m probably behaving like an expectant father whose wife is expecting our first child. Another reason that I had been putting it off was frankly because I was afraid of putting her though it.

I’ve been told it should take a cat 7-10 days to recover from spaying and she doesn’t need to go back to have stitches removed. They are self-removing staples. This is the first time that I have done this. What should I expect for the next week or two from her? What will be normal for her and what are danger signs to watch for? Thanks for any feedback.

My cats have always looked a little thinner after surgery. I'd say that's normal. Watch the incision for inflammation and infection, but otherwise what you're doing sounds great.

Don't worry yourself too much. Yeah, she's probably feeling out of it, but she just had surgery, and nothing you're describing right now seems particularly out of the ordinary.

She's an adult, so she isn't going to bounce back quite as quickly as a kitten would. Still, she sounds like she's on track.

Also, about her appetite. I've had pelvic surgery twice myself, and I can tell you that for a week or two afterwards, it is hard to eat as much as you normally would. Your abdominal wall is tense because it's healing itself, and that means that it gets uncomfortable more quickly when your stomach starts to expand and presses on the abdominal wall.

She may be feeling the same way. I'd say try smaller, more frequent meals.

I wouldn't worry about her being in pain, but be on the alert for infection by keeping an eye on her incision.  I've had kitties spayed and have never given them pain meds when they got home.  One came home very groggy like your girl and it took her about 2 days to really get over the anesthesia.  Remember that she was fasting prior to her surgery so she will look a little leaner since she's not eating her normal intake.  That will pick up.  If she starts hiding or crouching a lot, then she's not feeling well and probably needs to go back to the vet.

Thanks for the helpful responses.She has definitely perked up today. She is eating more, even playing a little and generally acting more like her old self. Her incision still looks fine so I guess we are on the way. And the best part?  No more sleepless nights while she is in heat. Yay!

Oh wow!  She's a beauty!!  So glad you got her spayed and so glad she's doing better.  Glad she's eating and playing a bit more like her normal kitty self.  Those are definitely all good signs.  Keep an eye on the incision and she'll be fine.

Oh wow!  She's a beauty!!  So glad you got her spayed and so glad she's doing better.  Glad she's eating and playing a bit more like her normal kitty self.  Those are definitely all good signs.  Keep an eye on the incision and she'll be fine.

Yeah, they always look skinnier after a spay. I always say it's because they had everything inside removed :tongue2:, but it could also be because of fasting before surgery. As long as she's eating and drinking and moving reasonably well, she's on track for a good recovery.

She is a pretty one! And she'll feel so much better not going into heat all the time .

I just wanted to post a follow-up to this thread. It has now been 7 days since the spaying and she has been doing just great. You would never know anything had ever happened to her and she seems good to go. She is behaving like her normal self with the exception that she still is not flying around the house and bouncing off the walls the way she normally does. I'm sure that will come later however.

As I mentioned earlier, the best part is that I won't have any more sleepless nights listening to her yowls while in heat and she also won't have to put up with what I am sure is the misery of being in heat. The other best part is that the whole thing cost me a total of only $36.00. It really does pay to shop around for deals from rescue agencies such as Humane Society, ASPCA, Animal Welfare League, etc.
