We had to tweak the system today and disallow editing of posts for users with fewer than six posts.
Once you make your sixth post on the forums you will be promoted to the rank of Kitten, at which point you can start editing your own posts.
Why are we limiting new members?
We've had some persistent spammers targeting TCS lately with a new technique. They join and make a seemingly legitimate first post, with no links in it. They do this to get past our automated watchdog, aka the spam filtering system. Once their post goes past the spam filter, they then go back and edit it to include their spammy links.
Hopefully, five posts should give us enough time to see if a new member is a spammer or a legitimate member.
Spammers, be gone!
