Hi, I found this forum today after a huge scare with my baby Mordred, and I really appreciate all the advice I've read here.  Mordred is 5 years old and I've bonded with him more than any other cat I've had in 45 years :)  He had to have emergency surgery today and catheterization for a blocked urethra and bladder stones...I almost lost him last night, and he is still not in the clear (though he came through surgery fine and they say they have cleaned his bladder out), but unfortunately I have read some rather sad stories here today about people losing their baby after such a surgery...so I'm still scared.

I realize I need to make some changes for him and I'm glad to see the resources here to help me do that so he can be more healthy.  He is my "special" kitty..see, I am diabetic and he never fails to wake me up in the middle of the night if my sugar has gone down in my sleep, no other cat that I've had has done that for me.

I look forward to being a part of the community!!

Hi ShaniFaye.  Welcome to the site, I'm glad you've found information here useful but hope it isn't causing you to worry too much tonight. I take it from your post that Mordred is still with the vet tonight?  Sending lots of
for Mordred to make a quick and full recovery and that he's well enough for hugs with you really soon.

Thanks MServant :)  They are keeping him two nights, he can come home Friday (something about not taking the catheter out too soon and making the urethra mad)  :)  They won't let me visit him today, but that I can tomorrow once he's had a chance to fully come out of the anesthesia and he won't be as upset when I have to leave him.  They said he came thru the surgery fine and that he was awake and mad, and I'm like...yeah, you put two catheters in him, did an abdominal and bladder incision and he doesn't have his mama or daddy....or course he's mad lol

We kind of went through this with him in January, but not to this extent (he had some crystals but didn't get blocked and had no stones).  We changed his diet by adding wet food and changing the dry to purina urinary tract (we tried and tried to get him to each the Hills c/d and he wouldnt respond to any trick we used)  This time the vet has given me some of the SO to try when he comes home, so we will see how that goes, but I'm questioning now if I should just take the dry out altogether, which will make it difficult when I go out of town.   2 Weeks ago our home was violently broken into and he has been stressed beyond belief, so I *believe* this might have brought on the flare up of the cystitis they diagnosed him with earlier. Without this flare up though, we might not have known about the stones, so I guess I need to be thankful...although my finances arent lol over 2k for today's procedures.   My vet adores him, and I feel good about him being in her hands and she is "hopeful" that he will make a full recover from this :)

It's good you have a good relationship with your vet and that they love Mordred - though may be not quite so much if he's been mad crazy with them coming out of the anaesthesia.

Your Mordred will have had more sedation and will have his catheters and things attached so the vets will probably be keeping him fairly sedated and calm tonight anyway.  I would hate not being able to go in to see him but I am sure your vets will have a tonne of experience to know what is going to be best for your boy.

I agree it's possible stress triggered the cystitis and maybe had the positive outcome of finding stones before they got worse. I'm sure all of you have been traumatized by what happened.  I had a cat with chronic bladder inflammation and if she got a bit stressed she'd get really acute cystitis with blood in urine almost immediately: she was vet phobic and I could only take her if she was acutely ill: vet visits would trigger her illness without fail - plus they had to sedate her for any examination and then I'd have to bring her home and nurse her round as she was too traumatized to do so at the vet.... that was not fun to do.  She wasn't nasty from the anaesthesia but she wouldn't be able to stand up or walk safely for about 24 hours and would cry as she was so disoriented.

More
for you all.

MServant, its more of a pouty mad, not an aggressive mad.  I just talked to them and they said he was doing well this morning and was producing urine and that the Doctor would be giving me a call a little later this morning to give me a full update :)  Fortunately for me, Mordred doesn'd mind the  vet, he loves everyone there..he just doesn't care for the car ride over, thankfully its only 2 miles away lol

Thanks aj!!

I'm so pleased he seems to be doing well and is just a bit grumpy. I would be too!  I'm sure they will be pampering him for you.  I hope the call from the vet goes well later and you get to visit him soon.

She called and said he's bright eyed and alert and eating and being very loving to everyone :)  Hubby and I will get to visit him this afternoon when we get off work, and bring him home tomorrow afternoon.  Did did say that he'd had a very angry bladder (not sure what that means exactly lol) and it had been at least 7 or 8 years since she'd seen one that bad...it was softball size when they cut him open :(
