Hi, on Monday morning my beloved kitten Coco went in to be spayed. When I picked her up in the afternoon, she was dribbling, glazed over and all soppy. We put her in the spare room, with everything she needed and let her rest.

By the evening she was trying to play (in an uncoordinated way) and also trying to rip at her stitches. I put a tube sock on her as vet said she wouldn't need a cone but was definitely ripping at the stitches, not just licking. (we tried a cone but she went nuts and I thought she'd pop a suture)

I stayed with her that night and the following day. She was still sleepy yesterday day but by the evening started leaping around (even trying to climb the curtains which she loves doing.) Tube sock is still in place and stitches are looking really good, no pus or infection.

This morning the mum cat who lives next door but comes in often, was found running and playing with her and again she was leaping on the curtains, up and down the hall and anywhere she's not suppose to be.

I have tried stopping her, putting mum outside, keeping her in one room but she's like a whirlwind. I am 8 and a half months pregnant and I can't really stop her movements easily.

Should I try and restrict her more? or as its been a couple of days now, is she on the mend?

Thought because she was so young that recovery time is going to be quick. I have tried to not play with her but she looks so bored and wants attention. Also mum is crying outside our back door all the time and wants to come play.

Any suggestions?

Personally, I would confine her, either to a bathroom or, even better, a large dog crate. Her surgery site is not healed until 10 days or so post surgery (unless there's complications.)

I work with a rescue and have seen Spays heal wonderfully with no complications and I've seen major complications (death in 1 case) from infections and cats ripping their sutures by being too active. Because of this we err on the side of caution and crate ALL cats post surgery (males 7 days, females 10 days.)

Hi there,

My kitten was spayed yesterday and is also acting pretty normal today and did a bit of running around with my other cat before I could stop her. The best thing for you to do is to call the vet and ask them what they think. My vet said it takes ten days for them to fully recover and he is pretty insistent on using a cat shirt or a cone for 10 days.  I got the shirt which is a baby onesie type outfit  instead of a cone, and I find when I put that on it really limits her mobility. I am also finding the pain medication to me making her want to sleep as well.

My vet didn't offer a onesie
but I had a cotton leg warmer that stretched nicely over the site. She pulled at it initially but is now easy with it. My vet said not to bother with a cone as she probably wouldn't notice it too much and that after 7 days she'd be back to normal with stitches out on day 10. Funny how different vets think different things. I'm just going to play it by ear as I think stress of cones and cages might make her take longer to heal. But thanks for the advice and I hope your little kitty heals well! :)
