Hi all, I was playing with my 1 year old cat Maya last night, and felt something weird...she has a scab of sorts on her mouth and I am a big worried. I do not have much experience with cats, so I do not know how serious this may be. She is a 100% indoor cat. It does not seem to hurt her or bother her when I touch the area. I am with her all the time, so I don't think this could have been there more than a day or two without me noticing, so I think it is probably something relatively new. She is acting totally normal. I took a picture, so if any of you have any idea what it may be or if it is anything to be worried about, please let me know! Any help or opinions would be super appreciated! Thanks!

If it doesn't hurt it may be an allergy. Cats can get weird stuff on their mouths from that. Have you changed anything recently? Food, litter, treats? Do you have plastic bowls?

It looks like an injury but that would usually hurt. I personally would call and talk to the vet. See what they think. Just because my Peanut's mouth gets so swollen sometimes that he needs a shot to clear it up.

Hopefully someone else will chime in soon with more info.

Thanks! Well actually, she has a plastic little water fountain thing that she drinks out of. Could that cause it somehow?

I'm not sure. The fountain doesn't bother Peanut at all. But it could be.
I actually looked at cat mouth sore pictures online (so sad) and did not see anything like that. Peanut's was always smooth. I wish I could help more. Sorry. Hope Maya gets better soon.

^Thank you! Her mouth actually seemed to be getting a little better, but just now I saw her scratching at it (I stopped her of course) but now it looks more 'raw' again and a little bloody. Anybody have any ideas or advice? Thank you!

My first wild guess would be feline acne.  This is a common problem with plastic water dishes.  Switching to stainless steel or ceramic dishes usually helps.

You can find a number of threads here about the problem, how to treat it, etc.

Ok thanks! I'll definitely get rid of her plastic water fountain. And I will read up on feline acne.

I did look up pictures of feline acne and did not really find pictures that looked like her wound, but I guess its hard to tell really. This is an update of how it looks tonight.

It really looks like Maya injured herself or had a reaction that caused a more raw wound. The first picture looked scabby. If it was healing that would explain why she was itching. Looks like she itched the scabs off. You may have to get the poor girl something to keep her from itching.

Yes it definitely looked like it was slowly healing before she scratched at it again. Would you recommend anything in particular to help with the itching?

I've been doing some internet searching. From internet pictures it looks like a lip ulcer. They're usually caused by allergies to food, bowls or fleas. Some of the pictures don't look like hers, but some do look similar. Most articles said that steroids can help while you figure out what the cause is. Fish oil is supposed to be good for itching if you decided not to go for steroids. Most important is figuring out what her allergy is, if that is the problem.

Thanks a bunch! Well I have gotten rid of her plastic water fountain today and replaced it with a stainless steal bowl, so lets see if that does it. I will get some fish oil for her tomorrow! Hopefully that does that trick. Should I wash her sore with some soap and water in the meantime until it heals? Or is that not a good idea?

This is my first cat, and the first health issue she has had, so just wanna make sure not to do something that might do more harm than good!

How is the sore doing?

I don't know if I'd use soap. It might sting since she scratched it. I don't really know though, just my thought. Watch it carefully for signs of infection, and if it's not getting better take her to the vet. Or at least give them a call and see what they think.
