Feeding kitten wet food not made for kittens

So, here is the deal. I was feeding my 10 week old kitten Royal Canin kitten wet food slices in gravy (I believe). I have been experimenting with a few other foods and have picked up some adult wet food along the way one of which is Avoderm brand and she goes NUTS over it.

How important is it that I keep her strictly on "kitten" wet food? I have been mixing the kitten with the avo because she seems to be getting tired of the kitten food.  She does like the kitten food from Wilderness (wet) she does not like the dry as much but I have not been giving her much dry food unless I can't be home for long periods of time.

My older cats are on dry food but I am "experimenting" with Pixie (kitten) with the wet food only diet.

Thanks!

Cindy

Any wet food is generally ok for kittens. Wet kitten foods tend to be a little richer in calories, so they will probably eat more of the regular stuff. I would keep dry available at all times for her to snack on as well.

Kitten food is packed with extra nutrients that growing kittens need.  Most adult cat food doesn't have as high a calorie count as kitten foods.  I fed Tumbles a cat & kitten food when he was a kitten.  He actually still gets it today, but only in a much reduced amount due to the fat and calorie content.  The CatInfo website has a lot of good info on it and is worth a read.   http://catinfo.org/   You could always mix the Royal Canin in with the Avoderm or put just a bit of the Avoderm in with the RC.

From what I've seen most canned cat food is for all cat stages of life. Some see adult, but when you read that back it says its ok for kittens and gives instructions on how to feed them too. Just make sure its high in protein, kittens need more protein then adults.

I was looking very closely at calorie counts of cat foods, since my 12 yr old had a weak appetite.  Kitten foods are higher in calories per ounce - in addition to being good for a growing kitten, they are also a good option for adult cats with diminished appetites.

BUT - you can find adult foods with high calorie counts as well. If I had a kitten, I'd be looking at the calories per ounce of ANY food, as some adult foods are higher than many of the foods designated for kittens.

I second that! I forgot to mention that. High cal adult food high in protein is what my kitten tends to eat x3

There is quite a range in calories once you take the time to look.  We were trying to get 200 cal/day into Boo.  Some of the 5.5 oz cans vary by as much as 50 calories, which doesn't sound like a lot until you realize that's 25% off of her daily intake in just one can!

The whole "cat food" "kitten food" is just a marketting thing. Cats don't need different foods for different life stages. Feeding an "adult" food(in larger quantities than you would an adult cat of course) is fine.
