I've just adopted a 4 month old feral kitten from my vet, and this is my first time socializing. She was living at an apartment complex with her mom and had spent 3 weeks at the vet before coming home with me. She's been here 5 days. I have her confined to a single room with dry food, water, cat bed behind the sofa, and a litter box. She spends most of her day hiding behind the TV cabinet or behind the sofa. I've been spending quiet time with her at night and bringing a little wet food in. The first night she disappeared, the second she spent hiding under the sofa, and the next two nights, she came out to explore even getting close enough to sniff and play a little, and she happily ate her food. Last night she wasn't feeling social tho I spent time in the room anyway. She didn't eat her wet food tho, even after I left her alone. We spend time in the room during the day but she stays in hiding until nighttime. I'm feeling pretty good about things, but am just a bit confused about why last night's food went untouched. I haven't tried to touch her or pick her up since getting her settled the first day, but I am going to need to get her back to the vet next week for kitty vaccines. That's the basics. Any thoughts for a newbie to this as to what I should or should not be doing would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you so much for taking the time and patience needed to socialized this kitten.  It will take time and patience.

A solitary room is best for now.  Do you have any other pets?  If so, keep the kitten secluded for while.  I would try adding a feliway diffuser to help her feel safe and calm.  I would also play soft music for her.  Have a radio playing or use your ipod.  I downloaded some cat harp music from Amazon.  All my cats love it.  When you visit, talk quietly so she gets used to your voice.  You can even just read aloud to her.  The best treat to use for luring cats is Gerber Stage 1 Baby food in Chicken or Turkey.  It is know as "kitty crack".  They all love it.  You can start by offering it on a spoon or even on your fingers.  Wand toys are great too.  You can play with the kitten and begin to gently rub the wand onto the cat.  This gets them used to touch.  Gradually you can use the wand to pet the top of the head, under the chin and down the back.  Gradually you can work your hand instead of the wand.

Take things very slowly.  With ferals, it's always 1 step forward and 2 steps back.  Also make sure that the litter box is not too close to where you are feeding her.

Cat trees are often great to allow the cat to get up high.  Position one near a window if possible and allow her to look outside.

Before you know it, your little kitten will be full of fun and joy!

I am trying socialize a cat who is about 1 yrs old.  There is one thing we are doing that seems to be working well.  In the beginning he hid constantly but after reading some info we changed the way we feed him.  We feed twice a day morning and evening and we bring food and wait in room for about 30 to 40 minutes for him to eat.  If he does not eat we take the food away with us and try again 1 hr later.  Now he eats every time with us in the room.  I realize to do this with a kitten may not work because he or she needs to eat. A kitten needs food.  Our cat is older.  Keep up the good work I'm sure she/he will come around.
