Personally, I would not let them out at all. But if you must, wait at least 2 weeks after they are spayed.

I agree.  Kittens have bad feeling for their territory, so they have very easy to wander astray.  They perhaps just run after a colorful fly or something...  And off they are, astray or run over.

They are also defenceless against any enemy.  Mean children, loose dogs, even an neigbouring cat defending its revire...

So if you must let them out, 1. be sure they know their name and come when you call.  Be with them at least the first two weeks they are out.

Then there is of course the question, if you shall try and let them be inside only cats - which is really my recommendation - or if you want to let the roam.  As many people do.   But that is perhaps another story and a discussion I wont take at this moment.

Good luck!

I was wondering the same thing. We were given a kitten who is now 18 weeks. She has just be spayed as of Monday, had all injections and is microchipped. She will also be wearing a safety collar with all her details.

We live in a safe area - surrounded by countryside and her mum lives next door (and constantly pops in to play, have second breakfast etc.) I have been letting kitten out for between 10 minutes to 1 hour under supervision to play with mum and she has only once navigated herself over our fence into mums garden - rest of time she just races around under bushes. When she has fully recovered from being spayed in a week or so, I will again be letting her out for an hour with supervision but was going to properly let her out from 22 weeks. She has been trained in the cat flap too, so I am hoping this will be ok.

I'm going to keep her in at night until she is a lot older though.

Think it depends on the cat, your location e.g. main roads and if you can supervise them a bit.

good luck - it can be quite a scary time to let the little ones roam!

I agree with Catspaws66 and StefanZ: I personally wouldn't let them outside at all, and under no circumstances until a few weeks after they are spayed/neutered.
If you do decide to let them be outdoor/indoor cats, DO get them microchipped. If found, there is a much better chance of reuniting you with your cat. And to be completed macrabe, even if found deceased, most animal control officers will still scan for a chip and notify the person of the sad news.
