Hi all! I really need some help. Boxer (my cat) had 100 or so bladder stones removed on Tuesday, September 17. It has been 5 days and I still haven't seen a normal sized amount of pee or heard a normal stream when he is going. I had to take him back to the vet on Thursday, September 19 because of constipation issues (my boy is really having a hard time going. He's had 3 enemas in the last week and a half). He's now eating Hill's Prescription Diet w/d dry and wet food. I am mixing in mirlax to help him poop until the constipation medicine arrives on Tuesday. He is currently getting 1/2 (up from a 1/4 because nothing at all was coming) teaspoon every 12 hours in a 1/8th of a can of wet food. He wasn't drinking water so this is the only way that I can make sure he is getting what he needs. I guess my question to you all is....how long before my boy is peeing a normal stream? Also, how long before I can let him clean himself in that area....he is starting to be a little bit stinky. I would love suggestions on whether giving him a bath (which he is going to hate) would help. Finally, when can I let him stop wearing the cone?

Thanks everyone!

Sorry no one's answered your post.  How did the vet visit go?  Is his urine stream and output any better?

If he's not drinking and peeing it could be a sign he's in pain. Surgery is painful for anyone. Is he taking pain meds? I would call your vet tomorrow, and see if you can ask them some of your questions. Ask your questions over the phone so Boxer doesn't have to go through another vet visit.

Good luck and please let us know how he's doing.

He seems to be doing better. He is going more but now I'm starting to worry about the poop issue I was taking about earlier. Even in 1/2 tsp of metamucil twice a say he isn't pooping. He is supposed to start a medication for that tomorrow when it comes in so hopefully that helps. I tried to call the very today but couldn't get through. Going to have to wait. He is through all his pain meds.

If he's not been eating much, he has nothing to eliminate.  It's common for kitties with urinary/kidney problems to have fewer bowel movements and constipation.  I always knew when my kitty was constipated because she would throw up.  She got miralax daily, but if I was doing it now, I'd probably use slippery elm bark.

Hi, Just replying to the cone issue.  My female cat Desi had bladder stones removed last November.  There were complications (a suture came loose) so she ended up having to have two surgeries.  The second surgery to fix the first one.  After the second surgery her incision was stitched up with visible threads that had to taken out 14 days later.  Since Desi didn't bother her stitches or lick them excessively she didn't need to wear a cone.  Perhaps Boxer doesn't really need to wear it either or perhaps only when he  is alone?  If you can get some help holding Boxer, you can tidy up his behind by cutting some of the hair away, but of course you must be very careful with the scissors.

I have a question about the food that he is eating now.  Desi is exclusively on Royal Canin Urinary SO so that the oxlate stones will not return.  Do you know what kind of stones Boxer had?  Hills makes a prescription diet similar to Urinary SO called c/d that is specifically meant to reduce the formation of various kind of bladder stones.  Perhaps the w/d food is temporary and the vet will switch him to c/d later?

RE: metamucil:  I gave this to Desi for years and it made no difference.  Recently the vet recommended PEG 3350 (polyethylene glycol 3350).  For the first time in years Desi has normal stools.  You can buy this over the counter much more cheaply than from the vet.  In Canada it is called Restoralax.  For cats the dosage is 1/4 teaspoon twice a day, but I reduced that to once a day for Desi because her stools got too soft.  It seems to have no taste.  I mix it in with her soft food.  Her soft food is more like gravy since I mix water in with the food.

Hope Boxer gets better soon.
