Kitten's changing color.....

When I brought Midnight in, he was black, with orange tabby undertones on his flanks. 

I noticed today that his undertones are gone, and he's got random white hairs cropping up, giving his flanks an almost 'smokey' look to them. 

Mom's a Tortie, and dad's an orange Tabbie (my best guess, based on watching the interactions of the cat family. The orange tabby was always watching while mother took one kitten hunting)

How much of a coat change is normal as kittens grow into cats?

I don't have much experience with this as my Bella was my first muted calico kitten. My vet told me calico and tortie kittens/cats change their coat colour throughout their lives. There is nothing to worry about. I'd take a lot of pictures of your baby as he gets older!
