My Romeo just had bladder surgery and had a catheter on last thursday and didn't come home until saturday. The first few days he was fine. He was taking antibiotic and anti-inflammatory/pain relief medication. He's out of the pain med and the past few days I've noticed small amounts of urine are coming out of him when he's not trying to. He's hiding more and isn't playing. Maybe he feels dirty? why is he peeing involuntarily? He always tried to lick his genitals since he got home. I was waiting for a call back from the vet before they closed like they promised but never got that call...

help?

I've never had a cat need a catheter, but as I recall, it seems some leakage afterwards is normal, however, the hiding does indicate he may still be having some pain.  I would definitely call the Vet back since they haven't called YOU back.

You don't indicate the purpose for your cat's bladder surgery, sorry if it was in a different thread and I missed it.  And I'm sorry your Romeo is having a hard time!  My cat has chronic cystitis (many years) and now his bladder inflammation has morphed into cancer.  We have been down this road many times.  If this helps, the positive that I keep thinking about when my cat gets incontinent is that at least he's not blocked.

The main thing to know in these circumstances is that it takes time to recover from a bladder problem.  A catheter can irritate the urethra and genitals, so the cat is going to lick there to try to alleviate the pain.  I assume your cat's bladder was distended, and sometimes it takes time for the bladder muscles to go back to full strength and regular duty of contracting and relaxing in order to properly void urine.  The urethral sphincter can also be compromised.  Until those muscles fully recover, urinary incontinence can be common.  When you speak to your vet, you might discuss whether he thinks your cat can temporarily benefit from an anti-spasmodic medication.  You can google search alpha-adrenergic agonists if you want to learn a little more about this.  My cat has taken phenoxybenzamine in the past, and it seems to help him quite a bit when he has voiding problems.

If he's hiding, as Sally said above, he's probably still in pain.  Irritations to the bladder do that to a cat.  You might speak to the vet about extending the pain medication for a little while longer (Buprenex is what my cat takes).

So that you are not panicking about urine all over the house, I'd suggest you keep your cat more confined in a comfortable place that he likes (maybe the same room he chooses to hide in) with a litter box close by and a bowl of water.  After my cat's bladder surgery, he leaked terribly for a few weeks.   At first, I kept him in a closed bedroom with an attached bath where he had a litter box to himself.  I covered the bed with a waterproof pad so I didn't have to worry about leaks on the mattress.  When he had free reign of the house, I covered the couches with the water proof pads as well.

Anyway, do follow up with your vet.  I'm sorry the vet hasn't initiated that process.  I hope Romeo feels better soon.
