Alright so I have had this same thing happen before (actually it was my parents and I was really young) and now it's happening with my cat which is  the same breed and I am stumped and worried.

My 9 year old DSH tuxedo cat who was always treated well and well fed and well cared for, yet not spoiled. He has his shots and is neutered (I have successfully raised and had old outdoor cats just fine before) after a move he was fine for about a week  or 2 then started acting weird. He would spend all day and night hiding in a place we couldn't get to and howling. Didn't seem o be in pain or sick. Then he got out (he's been an outdoor cat his whole life with no issue so we let him and showed him it was fine). He sniffed around a bit and came back in and seemed better and happy. But soon enough, he was back to hiding and crying (but eating and drinking). I let him out again as it seemed to do him some good last time. He went off to explore this time. He came back and howled a lot and seemed scared. I went and got him and brought him inside, we hung out and he seemed happy again. Then AGAIN he went and hid and howled on the fridge. We let him out again hoping we was just scared because the outside was different here and left him to explore. that was 3 days ago. He comes back around at night and howls sounding scared but won't come close to our door and runs away from us. He's always liked us before, I think he's confused. but we can't chase him down, he's really good at avoiding people.

What should I do, what is happening here what is going on!?

EDIT: we have always been able to call him home be snapping our fingers or coaxing and we tried luring him with food near out door.

I would recommend a vet visit to rule out a medical issue. The hiding and crying may be a sign of pain.

Once a medical issue is ruled out, I would look for an external trigger to his behavior. Are there any other cats or possibly stray dogs at the new place? The move may have stressed him out, but it sounds like something may be scaring him outside.
