Can I skip Kitten Vaxs??

So I was volunteering at my local shelter in the kitten nursery bottle feeding kittens (we had anywhere from 10-80 kittens at one time).  I decided that I would foster a litter of 3 and decide between the 3 which one I wanted after they were big enough to get fixed.  I had them for about 2-3 weeks and decided that I couldn't part with any of them.  So now I'm the proud owner of 3 kittens. They had a set of shots in the shelter when they were about 4 or 5 weeks old.  A second set at about 3 weeks later.  This was before they were mine and they were still considered the shelters even though they were living with me.  So after they got fixed they were officially mine.  I was told to bring them in at 4 months old to get their 3rd set of shots and a rabies.  And I believed I would be done.  I called a local vet and told him the scenario and they started to tell me that after I get this 3rd set I'm going to need another booster set in another 3 weeks.  This started making me question everything which is why I am here now.  I've been researching vaxs and I'm torn about what I should do and wanted to get opinions.  I have one older kitty about 10 yrs, who received shots every year until she was about 4 and I thought my parents never got shots for our cats every year what am I doing.  So I stopped.  I was going to go ahead and do the kittens until the vet freaked me out and I'm leary of too many vaccinations.

So my questions.  Considering the kittens have already had two doses.  Would you get a 3rd and the rabies and be done forever?  Or would you skip them all entirely forever?  I'm hesitant to get rabies since I'm worried about that cancer at the site of injection.  And I got 3 I'm taking in I feel like my odds are higher having 3 kitties that one of them could get it.  If enough people feel like I should at least get the 3rd series of vacs and the rabies I'll do it, but I just need someone to talk to about it.  I was worried about skipping rabies since I am pregnant with my 4th so I'm also uber paranoid about the health of my kids, but I also checked my area and it seems like they catch a bat with rabies once a month and that's it.  There are no other reported cases.  My kitties are indoor kitties only and we leave in a suburb so nowhere even close to where a bat would hang out.

So would you vaccinate or skip?

Thanks!!!

I am also very leery of over-vaccinating indoor kitties and not just because of vaccine related sarcomas. I think it's better to look at each situation individually and decide what is best, not just blindly vaccinate every year. Here is what one vet writes about vaccines that makes a lot of sense to me. http://www.catinfo.org/?link=vaccines

My Princess cam as a babe from a barn She was the runt of the litter of Tabbies and she was almost 8 weeks

We just gave her one set of shots the 1st year and every year after that the Vet never asked us about coming so many times

She is mostly indoor with the supervised walk out to the yard

We do autorise her rabies shot every 2 years as required as well she gets all her other shots each year

I suggest getting the 3rd dose of FVRCP and Rabies. It more likely than not that the first round of Vacs done at 4/5 wks did not take due to the likelihood that they still had immunity from the mom. Most kittens loose this immunity around 7-9 wks old. They need 2 initial boosters (that take) to give them the protection they need.

Because our rescue is small we are lucky that we can wait until kittens are around 9 wks to start vaccines. They are quarantined as a litter until they reach this age (and get a total clean bill of health) anyways. They get The FVRCP at 9, 12 and 15 wks. They get Rabies around 16 wks.

I always wait 7-10 days after the FVRCP vaccine to do Rabies. This way if they have a reaction, I know the culprit. My vet does not charge me an additional exam charge...I just pay the cost of the Rabies vac.

Also, if you are going to continue to help out at the local shelter, I recommend keeping your kitties up-to-date on their Vacs. Although I do believe you can wait 18 months in between boosters. But, working for a rescue myself, even with good hygiene and taking precautions, I still on occasion can bring a virus home to my kitties. =\.

I don't think I'm going to be volunteering anytime soon.  Since I'm pregnant and stuff it's not worth the risk right now.  Thanks for all the insights.  I'm hoping to get a few more.

I also think that vaccination is overrated for our pets. Some vaccinations are of course essential, depending on the age and conditions of the cat, but it is hard to believe that their immune system works worse than ours, and you know, humans don't get vaccinated all the time unless there's a potential risk for some particular disea.

I read the article that vball91 linked, and I think it's a good reading about the subject. Well, rabies vaccine once a year is mandatory in my country, or else they can take away the pet and kill him. For the other vaccines, we discuss about the risks with our vet, and decide accordingly. I think a knowlegeable vet should be able to explain what good a particular vaccine is for, which cats can be considered in the risk group, and possible side effects of that shot.

But I also think that the first vaccinations of kittens and/or young adults are important to build up a strong immune system, so I try to be extra careful about their first vaccinations.

Vaccines are amazingly important. Trust me they stopped my cats from getting distemper and many other viruses. HOWEVER, after the 3 set of kitten shots and a rabies (yes only 3 sets of shots) I do them the next year. Then I do vaccines every other year. This is due to sarcomas AND recent studies showing that vaccines are actually effective for longer than previously thought. But yes get at least the last set from the shelter then again in 1 year. At least that has been the best experience for me.

I have not gotten my older indoor cats vaccination  in years. I did start my 1 year old cats vaccinated when I first found him when he was a baby but never finished as he got sick. Me personally I don't believe in them unless they are in contact with other random animals or go outside.
